This past year, Schlage announced The Keyless Era campaign, which was put into action to educate home owners on the electronic lock market. Schlage conducted an online survey which found that 65% of Americans would be considering getting smart locks. They already have the Touch and Connect locks on the market, but at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show they are announcing the Sense. They are calling it the most advanced lock system to date and it will let consumer choose how they access their house. As Schlage put it, the Connect shows that they are continuing to offer consumer choice of which lock they want. The new Sense lock provides similar to features to the previous models, but has a few new features as well. The Schlage Sense is a smart lock that utilizes Bluetooth, which is what powers the key free convenience, even though it still has a key slot. This will be the first that will allow you to “talk to unlock” the door. This voice feature will be done through the companion application for your smartphone, allowing you to unlock the door via a voice command. You can of course still unlock the door via the touch keypad, as the Sense can handle up to 30 codes at the same time. Via the applications you can mange these codes, delete the codes you know longer need, see battery life, update the settings, and see the status of the lock. This is all done via its own application with no monthly subscription fees and you don’t have to connect the lock to a home automation system. The Sense does not feature any Z-Wave or ZigBee connectivity, only a Bluetooth connection. It is interesting that they are not offering this as an option to add to a home automation platform, like Wink. I wouldn’t be surprised if they end up releasing a variant of this lock that features the extra connectivity at some point in the future, but Schlage has not confirmed or commented on this.

Any lock or lock systems main goal is to be secure, and Schlage is providing Grade 1 Security with the Sense. It has a built-in alarm technology which will go off when it senses potential door attacks. The Sense will be available in two styles, Camelot and Century, but you get a variety of finishes to choose from. These finishes are Matte Black, Satin Nickel and Aged Bronze. The Schlage Sense will be available nationally via select stores and online outlets later in 2015. Schlage did not confirm the pricing for the Sense either, but it should be announced closer to its availability.
