The BlackBerry PlayBook, RIM’s first tablet. It is BlackBerry’s own Tablet OS(Operating System). RIM has only been working on the PlayBook for the past 10-12 months, so for how long it has been developed for it is a very nice tablet. Now, let’s get started with the full review on the BlackBerry PlayBook.

Design

The PlayBook is very strong built tablet. The Tablet has a 7-inch screen, this makes it much more portable than the other 9 or 10 inch tablets out there. The weight of the PlayBook is in between heavy and light, it is just right. The base price for the PlayBook is $499, for the 16GB model. Now lets see what the PlayBook has inside. It has a 1GHz dual-core processor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 1GB of RAM, 5 megapixel camera in the back, 3 megapixel camera in the front, 3.5mm headset jack, HDMI Port, Micro USB Port, & a Microphone. The 7 inch screen has a resolution of 1024 x 600, this makes for great colors on the screen. From just a quick look at the PlayBook, you will ask yourself where are the speakers? They are built into the sides of the display. These speakers are loud and clear. On the top of the playbook you have your volume controls and play and pause controls. The worst thing about the PlayBook is the power button. It is flush with top of the PlayBook, it does not really make sense. As you can wake up the PlayBook by swiping from the Touch-Sensitive ring around the screen. Overall the design of the PlayBook is great and makes for a nice tablet.

OS-Operating System

RIM has created a brand-new OS(Operating System) for the PlayBook. Many people have been asking RIM to re-design its mobile OS, so this is the start of a new type of RIM many are saying. The PlayBook was meant to be the first enterprise-grade tablet, and one that would support every type of plugin. The main component for the OS is that there are gestures. These gestures control the operating system. The OS itself only take a couple of minutes to get the basics of. Now most Blackberry’s are not the fastest phones out there, we can assure you that the PlayBook is made fast! It will blow your mind if your used to using your BlackBerry. We have been using the full-release of the OS(Operating System). Don’t get us wrong every once in a while an app might crash, but for most of the time it runs quite smoothly. Overall the OS is very nice and will hopefully make its way onto the BlackBerry’s.

Apps

The BlackBerry App World launched with around 3,000 apps, this means that the PlayBook has a good amount of apps. At times it may be limited, though it should be good for the average user. Some of the best apps come pre-loaded on the device. The “Calculator” app really stand out. It is designed with perfection. You have many different options that you can choose from in the calculator. Another great app is the Browser. It let’s you access the web from your PlayBook. The best part is almost any plug-in works perfectly on it. This is huge for tablet, to be able to use almost any plugin in the world. The PlayBook also comes preloaded with “Need For Speed Undercover” and “Tetris”. They are very nice games that will keep you busy for a while. They are courtesy of EA Games, who will have more games coming to the App World soon. Now, most of the mail apps that are soon preloaded on your tablet are links to the mobile sites. So no full apps for those yet but, you should be able to get by with the mobile sites. It also comes preloaded with “Adobe Reader”, “Word To Go”, “Sheet To Go”, and “Slide show To Go”. These come in handy and will appeal to the more business users of the PlayBook. Overall BlackBerry App World on the PlayBook is Great! And hopefully it will continue to grow!

Battery

The battery on the PlayBook last’s around 7 hours. However it really depends on how you use it, this is how it goes for many tablets. If your going to have WiFi on, brightness on, and browsing the web you should be good for a day or 2. It is also good for business presentations, it will last long for that as well. however if you plan to do non-stop gaming, you may want to bring a charger with you. Just In Case. The battery will be fine for most, if not all, users of the BlackBerry PlayBook.

Bottom Line

The BlackBerry PlayBook is a good tablet. While it is aimed for business use, you can definitely “play” with it. While there are some bad things about, the good things over power them. If you are looking for a portable tablet with a new OS(operating System), than the PlayBook is for you. The price of the PlayBook is ok, it starts off at $499, for 16GB. You Can View Or Buy The BlackBerry PlayBook Here.
