Our friends over at Lenovo just sent us an IdeaPad K1 for review. It is one of there newly announced tablets, and we are loving it. The box and packing that the tablet come sin, is gorgeous as well. They took time with every detail ,even the little ones, to make sure that it was a great as it could be. Now lets get started with the full review of the Lenovo IdeaPad K1.

Hardware

The hardware on the Lenovo IdeaPad K1 is great. For starters it is running Android 3.1 Honeycomb. The OS(Operating System) is great to use. Now lets get into the specs of the tablet. It has a 10.1 inch HD display, NVIDA Tegra 2 dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor, 13.3mm thin, 1.65lbs, WiFi & BlueTooth Connectivity, Micro SD Card Reader, Mini HDMI, Docking Port, 10 hour battery, Full Flash Support, 2(two) Cameras, Front-2 mega-pixel, Back 5 mega-pixel, up to 64GB of storage, up to 1GB of Memory, and Digital Rights Management built in. The IdeaPad K1 is fully loaded and it is fast. It is powered by an NVIDA Tegra 2 processor, and Android 3.1 Honeycomb, when combined gives you the ultimate tablet experience. The tablet it self is also well built. On the left hand side, you have your power, volume, and orientation lock buttons. You also have your Micro SD Card Reader there. On the bottom of the tablet you have your docking port, Mini HDMI, and headphone jack. On the top of the front you have your front-facing-camera. On the back you have your camera and flash. It also says “Lenovo” on the back. With Honeycomb almost all of your buttons are built in to the OS, however Lenovo has added a home button to the front right hand side. When you push it, it will bring you to your home screen. Overall, the Lenovo IdeaPad K1 has great hardware and a great design.

Apps

Now, Lenovo wanted to make sure that as soon as you take the IdeaPad K1 out of the box, you’d be ready to play. Lenovo has achieved this by, having over 30 apps pre-loaded on the device. And if those apps aren’t enough, you have 2 places to get Apps. The regular old Android Market and the new Lenovo App Shop. The Lenovo App shop will have apps that were just made/customized for the Lenovo tablets. For started you get “Documents To Go” for free, it is regularly a $14.99 app. So, the app that come pre-loaded are just free apps, some of them are paid apps. The best app the comes pre-loaded is Netflix. The Lenovo Tablets are the first tablets to launch with Netflix. Thus making them Netflix Certified Tablets. And because it has DRM(Digital Rights Management) built right in, users can stream Netflix Movies/TV Shows from anywhere. Some of the other pre-loaded apps are, Zinio Reader, mSpot, mSpot Movies, Amazon Kindle, Amazon MP3, Slacker Radio, Angry Birds HD, Warships, Drawing Pad, NFS Shift, Talking Tom, Printer Share, Norton Security, Social Touch, Workshop 4.6, and many many more. You are set right from the start, to have a great experience with the Tablet. The Lenovo App Shop, is one of the many add-ons to the operating system. The Lenovo App Shop includes AppVerse. AppVerse is a handy tool that help you discover new apps. Basically it is a social network that is designed for sharing and discovering apps. You can see which apps your friends and family purchase. Read peoples reviews of the different apps and much more. Overall, it is a nice feature to have, you can see what other people think which will ultimately help you when your buying apps. The Lenovo App Shop offers you apps that have been tested for the Lenovo Tablets. Any app from the App Shop will work with your tablet. Sometimes certain apps that are sold in the market place do not work with every tablet on the market. Overall, on the IdeaPad K1 you will have no trouble with Apps.

Lenovo’s Customizations To The Operating System

Lenovo has added some features to the Android 3.1 Honeycomb. One of the new main features is called, “Lenovo Launcher”. It is found on the Home Screen and is in the middle of it. In fact, you can’t miss it. It is a way to simplify your tablet. You can organize your most used apps and be able to open them with just a touch. There a 4 different panes, and you can customize each for what ever function you want it to do. It allows for a lot of customization to be made. You can also access settings with just a tap. It is the icon on the right hand side in the middle. That will take you right into the settings app. Lenovo Launcher is a nice feature to have. The other main feature is “Lenovo Social Touch”. This is were all of your social media can come together. When you connect a social media account to Lenovo Social Touch, you will get updates, notifications, and alerts from that account. You can add calendars, email, Twitter, Facebook, and much more. You can view all of your social media in one app, that also has your calendar email and much more. It is the one app that can combine many other apps into one very easy to use space. There are also modes, so certain account will only show up on a certain mode. For instance your “At Work” mode may not show Facebook and Twitter. Ah but for instance, your “At Home” may show all of your different accounts that are linked to it. So, you can customize it to the way that you like or that best fits your lifestyle. Lenovo also improved “Navigation” in Android 3.1 Honeycomb. You have your “Home Row Icons”, those are your Back, Home, Layers, App Wheel, and Setting Panel. Lenovo has made the color more bold so you can see it easier. The settings panel let you view your status of the system. Things like, WiFi and battery status. It will also update your on your system from time to time. They have also added “App Killer”, when you open layers you can see all of the apps that are running. You will also see the Red “X” in the corner, when you tap that button the app is shut down. It makes it very easy to control what is running and what isn’t. The “App Wheel” gives you quick access to your favorite apps. You can drag and drop apps in the App Wheel. Then you can always find those apps by just tapping the “App Wheel”. You can also edit your pages, by just tapping the “+” sign in right hand corner. From there you can drag and drop widgets and rearrange apps that are on your home pages. Once again this allows Customization of the OS(Operating System), this allows you to make it the way you want, thus making the tablet easier to use. Overall all of the customizations that Lenovo made to the operating system are great and will help you use the IdeaPad K1.
