Verizon Introduces BlackBerry Bold 9930 - NJTechReviews

Our friends over at Verizon have sent us over the BlackBerry Bold 9930 for review. The phone is available online right now but, will makes it way into stores on August 25, 2011. It retails for $249.99 on a 2-year contract. Just from a few minutes with the phone, you can tell it is good. By far one of the best BlackBerry’s I have reviewed. But, will be enough to help RIM get back in the race, we will see. Now let’s get started with the full review on the Verizon BlackBerry Bold 9930!

The BlackBerry Bold 9930 is part of the largest global launches of BlackBerry’s ever. The old Bold was known for being a bit big, the new one has new sleek and stylish design. Some of the differences ,just from looking at it, are the better keyboard, and a trackpad instead of a trackball. The display it self is mostly flat but, the QWERTY Keyboard pop’s out a little bit. Play with the phone a little bit and you start to notice the differences. For instance the sides of the phone have a nice chrome siding to it. On the left hand side you have you micro USB port and your headphone jack. On the top you have your sleep button. On the right hand side you have your volume rocker, mute button, and camera button. It has a very clean design to it. Above the screen you have your indicator light and BlackBerry’s Logo. Under the Keyboard you have Verizon’s Logo. If you flip the phone over you will notice it is different from the Bolds before the 9930. For starters, you have composite weave instead of the leather found on the previous models. It adds more class. Above that you will find your 5 mega-pixel camera, flash, and the “Bold” logo. The composite weave design is also the battery cover door. If you take that off, you will uncover your battery. The battery is a 1,230mAh battery, it is found in other BlackBerry Smartphones. Once you take the battery out, you will uncover some of the features of your phone. Under that you find your SIM Card slot and your Micro SD Card Slot. It has many different radios like, dual-band CDMA / EVDO (800/1,900MHz), dual-band UTMS / HSPA (900/2,100MHz) and quad-band GSM / GPRS / EDGE (850/900/1,800/1,900MHz). It also has WiFi built-in. So, you can answer almost any frequency. That is there is no 4G radio of any kind in the BlackBerry 9930. This would have been a nice touch, since Verizon’s 4G Network is one of the best networks in the nation. Maybe they will updated in the holiday season to 4G LTE, that is the one thing missing from the Bold 9930 so far. Inside the phone it has 768MB of RAM, Liquid Graphics, and a 1.2GHz processor. So, the technology inside is pretty good. The Bold 9930 runs on Verizon’s 3G Network, one of the best networks in the nation. The call quality on the Bold 9930 is top-notch. There was no static during the call or cutting out while on the call. The network performance was very good and it is to be expected by the amount of radios inside the phone. Keep in mind network strength all depends on Verizon’s Strength in your area. The speakerphone is also very good and is loud and clear. Overall, the Hardware in the Bold 9930 is great and adds up to make a great smartphone.

The Bold 9930 has a 2.8-inch LCD display with a resolution of 640 x 480. Just from looking you may not be able to tell that it is a touch screen. The display is absolutely beautiful. RIM/BlackBerry hit is right with this display, it shows bright, vivid, and crisp images; That just look amazing. The touch screen part, works extremely well, it is quick to respond. In the web browser the pinching in to zoom works great, there is no delay what so ever. The touchscreen works great, they did good with the display. Overall, the bold 9930 has a great display.

BlackBerry’s are known for having good keyboards. The Keyboard on the Bold 9930 is great, one of the best on the market. It is super easy to type on. The keyboard is not big but, not too small. It is very simple to use the alt key very naturally while typing a long email or sending out a quick text. The keys light up very well, and make it easy to see in the dark. The keyboard is tactical, and it works very easy with a light tap on the key, and your done. Overall, the keyboard on the Bold 9930 is great and may be the best QWERTY Keyboard on the market.

Operating System-BlackBerry 7

BlackBerry 7, is the latest and greatest operating system for BlackBerry’s. While it still looks the same on the outside, there have been many many improvements made to the entire OS(Operating System). It runs fast on the Bold 9930, this thanks to the 1.2GHz Processor inside. It helps to speed up the phone a little bit. In the past BlackBerry’s were known for being very slow, with BlackBerry 7 and the upgraded processor those days are fading away. The BlackBerry Bold 9930 is a fast phone, at least for a BlackBerry. One area that needs an improvement is BlackBerry App World. Theres need to be more apps coming out for the phone. Keep in mind BlackBerry’s are meant for business but, know they have to open their market up and change with the times. With that begin said, they are trying to do the best that they can. The BlackBerry still does email insanely well, it also does contacts and calendar well. So, while it is mainly business orientated they are opening it up to more and more people. And many people have gone out and gotten BlackBerry’s. The Bold 9930 needed to make a splash in the market and we are happy to say that it did. The browser app is much better, it is based of “WebKit” now. It still needs some more upgrades to it, so it can compete with the browser in other Operating Systems, but it is not that bad. The 1.2GHz processor speeds things up a lot, for instance scrolling is much faster than on other BlackBerry’s in the past. Of course it may take it a while to load every now and then, but for the most part it does the job. Overall, BlackBerry 7 will help to bring the BlackBerry back and will save RIM/BlackBerry.

Bottom Line

The BlackBerry Bold 9930 is the best BlackBerry yet. The upgrades that were made to it were the right ones. It brings RIM/BlackBerry back into the great Smart-Phone race, if you will. It is extremely thin at just 10mm thin, it is quite impressive for a phone not just a BlackBerry. It has a 2.8 Touch Screen display, that is one of the best displays on a phone out there. Battery Life has always been a strength with BlackBerry’s, it is not different with the Bold 9930. The QWERTY Keyboard is great, it will make your life easier when it comes to typing emails on the go. The new BlackBerry 7 OS(Operating System) helps to bring BlackBerry’s up to date with what an Operating System needs, it makes using the phone simpler and faster. Having a 1.2GHz processor also helps to speed things up. The one thing that is missing, that we can live without, would be support for Verizon’s 4G LTE Network. However, we would recommend the Verizon BlackBerry Bold 9930 to anyone out there who is looking for a smartphone or upgrading from another phone on the market; You will not regret getting the BlackBerry Bold 9930. The BlackBerry Bold 9930 goes for $249.99 with a 2-year contract or $509.99 with out a contract. Even though the price is high, it is worth it for a phone this great.  You Can Get More Info On Or Buy The Verizon Wireless BlackBerry Bold 9930, By Clicking Here. Be sure to let us know if you go out and get the best BlackBerry yet. We would like to thank “Verizon Wireless” for providing us with a copy of the “Verizon Wireless BlackBerry Bold 9930”.
