Ash Sayed PlayBase Founder Interview Image 1 - NJTechReviews

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of interviewing Ash Sayed. He is the founder of PlayBase, the new Android Tablet that has been sweeping the news. While it is aimed at kids, it has all the features of a regular Android tablet. We spoke about everything regarding the PlayBase. Below you will find my interview with Ash Sayed.

  1. Where did you get the idea for the PlayBase from? Who is your main audience?

The main idea for PlayBase came from my friends and family. Kids are always using their parent’s smartphones and tablets, however  they were ruining their parents’ device by either dropping them on the ground or spilling something on them. The PlayBase is one of the first “kid-proof” tablets on the market, something that the market needed. It has the full functionality and look of an Android tablet but, it was designed for kids in mind. The main audience for the PlayBase would be both kids and adults.  Marketed as a kid-proof Android tablet, it was designed for adults, with their kids in mind.

2. How is that you have a tablet packed full of great technology but, you are able to keep the price so low?

My background in Product Development has enabled me to forge good relationships with many premium vendors. This made it easier for me to keep the cost low as well as push the technology and innovation in PlayBase. With so many tablets out in the current market, I wanted to make the PlayBase experience accessible to everyone, yet not compromise on the quality.

3. Can you tell me a little about the unique case that the PlayBase has?

The PlayBase has 2 layers of protection. The actual tablet has a formed metal design, which makes it much more durable than a plastic design. Then we have the PlayCover, which is made out of silicone.  Encased in the PlayCover, it gives it an additional 3 millimeters of silicone protection, making it drop-proof, spill-proof, shock-proof – basically very kid-friendly. Each PlayBase unit ships with it’s own PlayCover. New designs will be coming soon. Check our web store for updates www.play-base.com

4. What type of Operating System and Software does the PlayBase have?

The PlayBase is running Android 2.3 Gingerbread with a simple PlayBase User Interface. I wanted to keep it simple, make it very easy to use. Our user interface is very clean and clear. It has the full functionally of Android 2.3, so it would work just like any other tablet. We also added new live wallpapers and direct access to your audio and visual media. In terms of storage, it has 8GB of built-in Nano Flash Storage. It also has a microSD card slot, that can hold up to a 32GB microSD Card.

5. What does the future for PlayBase hold?

PlayBase is the first offering in the PlayBase family. We will be coming out with more devices early next year. I want to keep improving on the design and functionality of PlayBase. For our next device, we may incorporate a cellular network. We have been getting a lot of requests from US customers and we are now waiting to confirm when we can make it available in the States. We should release more info on this in our Press Release coming out next week when you can order PlayBase on-line. This version of PlayBase is really an introduction of our philosophy.

So, this was my interview with Ash Sayed, the founder of PlayBase. Ash has been in product design for the past 15 years, specifically consumer product design. For 10 years he was working on cell phones over at Motorola. He also work for TomTom and at Philips designing there shavers and wake up lights. He then set up Karuma out of Singapore. He set it up to develop consumer products as a services business. Then PlayBase came and this is the first venture out of Karuma. We will catch up with Ash again soon to see what else the future of PlayBase holds. We would like to thank Ash for taking time out of his busy schedule for doing this interview.
