Today or rather the afternoon and early evening was not the best for the Southeast portion of the United States. All four major carriers, those being Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint, as well as some of the smaller carrier had a massive service outage. This outage was affecting both wireless and wire line service in areas like Knoxville and Chattanooga. These were the areas that were hit hardest. As of 8:20PM it appears that some carriers service has begun to come back online.
It appears unique that the outage is pretty much affecting all of the carriers. We have requested comment from all of the carriers, and will place their response below. Hopefully, over the next few hours or maybe even days they can figure out the cause of the issue. Verizon Wireless is happy to say that after a long 5 hours, service has been restored as of 8:20,
“Verizon Wireless experienced interruption in service for some customers throughout Knoxville and Chattanooga today. The outage lasted approximately five hours. Engineers were able to identify and resolve the issue and service was restored by 8:20 PM EST. A connectivity issue caused the service interruption. Our engineers were able to work with our vendor partner to resolve the situation.”
Verizon appears confident in that it has been restored and there engineers worked some over time to get the network back up and running. They have also said that a connectivity issue caused the issue and they worked with their vendors in the area to restore service.
The T-Mobile Help handle on Twitter has been quite busy this evening, they have been stating that they, “are aware of what’s going on and we have engineers from multiple carriers working to get it resolved. We appreciate your patience“. So, it seems that this issue is not linked to just one carrier, but a mixture of a few of them.
We have just received a comment from AT&T, and like Verizon, they have received the all clear and are now back up and running.
“Wireless and wireline service has been restored for all customers in parts of the Southeast affected by a hardware-related network issue. Our engineers completed repairs and service is running normally. We apologize for any inconvenience.”
They had their engineers complete repairs and they have apologized for the inconvenience, it appears that it was a hardware related network issue, that causes the outage for parts of the South East.
Sprint has gotten the all clear as well and they are also now have network operations running normally.
“Earlier this evening some Sprint customers around the Southeast may have experienced a disruption in their voice and/or data service due to an issue with a local service provider. Happy to report that all services have now been restored.”
They note that the service disruption with both voice and data was caused by a local service provider, but they are not fully restored.
We have reached out to AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint for comment; We will update this post when we hear back from them.
