Earlier this week I had the pleasure of speaking with Loren Bouchard, the creator and executive producer of Bob’s Burgers. As you may know, Bob’s Burgers is a hit animated comedy on FOX, that airs Sundays nights. Even better, they have their next episode airing this Sunday, January 17th, and their 100th episode is coming in May. And for you NJTechReviews readers out there, keep reading to see an exclusive clip from this weeks episode.

Jacob Krol: Let’s start off with the burger of the day; I’m sure you get this a lot, but where do they come from?

Loren Bouchard: They come from the writer of the episode, each one has a chief writer and it is their baby. The Burger of the Day come from them and they make quite a few of them, sometimes six or eight. We are picky with what we go for, we want a burger that is a joke and something that could be edible. The joke is not more important than the burger, it is believable and stupid.

This started from the idea of burgers that can believable and then a cookbook happened. There was a blogger making the actual burgers and we began to work with him, and come March we have The Bob’s Burgers Burger Book coming out.

Jacob Krol: This week’s episode is The Cook, the Steve, the Gayle & her Lover and comes in at episode 94. Can you tell me a little about it?

Loren Bouchard: This episode was written by Nora Smith, it all came from her strange and unique mind. This week’s episode will be airing out-of-order and it is my fault for that. We knew, after looking at all the slots, we had one floater, and we should have had this episode air before Thanksgiving. The truth is that the Thanksgiving episode refers to this one, it is a complete mess up and punishes the fans who watch on a weekly basis. It will be corrected for those who are watching it on Netflix when it comes out next year, for those watching live you are punished and we feel terrible about it. If we could we could we would send out on apology or a t-shirt, or even the Men-In-Black erase your mind tool.

But this weeks episode is a classic dinner party story and has a big surprise, be sure to check out the clip below.

Jacob Krol: Where do the song ideas come from, they have become huge fan favorites and are a staple now?

Loren Bouchard: We try to put a new song in every episode, for the end credits, this is our “Bollywood” ending. We leave the episode with our characters dancing, singing, and being silly over an original song. This has been done since partway through season one, this song comes from myself, the writers, the composers, or from anyone really; it is a free for all.

Even more so we wait for the last-minute to get these songs, it truly is a high wire act. In terms of putting songs in the middle of the episodes, we do this a little more sparingly, but if we feel it works we put them in. If it wants to be there and we have time for it, will wedge it into the show.

Jacob Krol: Episode 100 is coming right up, in May, how excited are you?

Loren Bouchard: I mean, the whole fact that were are still around for each episode is a celebration. Each one is the 100th episode for me, it is so nice that we are still in business; it keeps me excited and coming to work. It seems that this whole season is the one with the 100th episode. This morning we were just working on the song this morning, figuring out the chorus, as he begins to play on the piano, it is jazzy!

The hundredth episode should be a quintessential Bob’s episode, it should not be the one were everything goes crazy. For me it should feel like the pilot and it should celebrate the consistency. It should be the perfect Bob’s episode that could have come anywhere.

Jacob Krol: Leading up to the 100th episode, what else do we have coming this season?

Loren Bouchard: We are very lucky with out guest actors, we have Megan Mullally as Gayle coming up in this episode, we will never stop writing her in. The Gene and Courtney show will be airing on Valentines Day, with David Wain coming back as Courtney who is Gene’s love interest. She is the like-likeness of Gene who sucks on her necklace. Mr. Grant, who is played by Will Forte, will be making an appearance in this episode as well.

Then after that, Sexy Dance Fighting, is the reprise of a character from season 1, the return of Jairo the Brazialan capoeira instructor. Steve Buscemi and Kevin Kline will be guests in this episode as well. Second Couch will be coming in March, where the Belcher’s get a new couch with Jordan Peele and Keegan Michael Key guesting.

The Spring will be good, we got pushed off a little with the Fall schedule due to sports and awards shows. We will be running like crazy in the Spring, you will need to tell your DVR to record 7:30 and 9:30 for the last three weeks in May. We will be the book ends on the night.

Jacob Krol: Do you have a favorite tech product?

Loren Bouchard: I love my tech, I really love musical tech. I have a new piano that writes songs, or rather helps me write songs. And than app wise, B-Rhymes Pro is really good for writing songs. It is words that don’t quite rhyme, and everyone needs to look them up and it is an easy way to get them. It is a website and application, if your writing songs you need this. Oh and Sonos, I gotta say I like Sonos a lot, it is big in my house. I use Spotify and Rhapsody, the latter has been around a lot longer than Spotify.

I want to send a huge thanks to Loren Bouchard for taking the time out to chat with me and be sure to check out the exclusive clip from this weeks episode below, as promised!
