DIRECTV NOW is AT&Ts entry into the cord cutting world, and it launched late last year, but not without a few issues. They do manage to provide a balanced lineup of channels through several different plans. In 2016 AT&T also announced they have begun working on 5G, along with carriers like Verizon. But at CES 2017 the carrier announced that they will test DIRECTV NOW on a 5G network this year.

Select residential customers who use AT&T in Austin Texas will be testing the service. Those selected will get a  fixed wireless 5G connection installed in their home. And they will be able to test streaming of DIRECTV NOW, along with “next-generation entertainment services.” Although AT&T would not clarify as to what those services might be, however, I am thinking it might be multiple streams and the upcoming DVR feature.

All-in-all real world tests of 5G connectivity and networks is great for the overall industry. This is not the only 5G trial AT&T is planning for the year, they are working with business customers as well. Plus, there 4G LTE network should hit speeds of 1GBps this year as well.
