New Jersey might already have Uber and Lyft, but the state is getting more technology savvy. The popular car-sharing application, Getaround, has officially launched in the garden state. Or at least in some areas of NJ with Hoboken, Jersey City and Weehawken getting the service today.

It is entirely different from Uber or Lyft, as you get to drive yourself and can essentially rent out someone else’s car and pay to use it by the hour. You might be asking yourself how does this work, and it is pretty secure. Between the mobile application and the Getaround Connect hardware piece, it uses GPS, Bluetooth, and a keyless remote technology to have the experience work. Using the iOS or Android application a user can rent out a car that is available and use their phone to unlock the vehicle.

At launch today in New Jersey, there are over 500 vehicles available in the application. And for the owners of the car this is a safe way to earn some extra income. And unlike Uber or Lyft, it doesn’t require too much extra work on there part considering you don’t have to drive the customer.

Getaround is available beginning today Hoboken, Jersey City, and Weehawken NJ.
