Netflix has announced that they’re planning a new series based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher Saga. This series will be the first pure fantasy series Netflix has produced and, following a Polish film and television series both known as The Hexer, is the third live action adaptation of the saga. Surprisingly this also seems to be the first to feature Sapkowski as a creative consultant. This saga has also been adapted into a series of video games, with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt being released in 2015 to rave reviews and which was followed by two critically acclaimed downloadable expansions.

The series itself consists of five novels and three collections of short stories, all written by Sapkowski, published between 1992 and 2013, with the most recent book still unavailable in English. The stories follow a group of “witchers”, monster hunters with magical powers, and the various adventures they go on in a medieval world inhabited by many of the creatures from European, and specifically Polish, folklore.

Executive producers for the series include Sean Daniel and Jason Brown of the Sean Daniel Company as well as Tomek Baginski and Jareko Sawko of Platige Image, a Polish visual effects studio which may be producing the show’s special effects. Specific directors, cast members, and writers have yet to be announced as has an air date.
