Security Concerns Rising for Verizon

Data breaches and leaks are never good news for any company, but in the case of Verizon today there is some light at the end of the tunnel. There was a data breach at Verizon partners server, more specifically the vendor was using an Amazon storage server. The good news is that there was no loss or theft of Verizon or customer information.

Verizon is saying that some customer information was stored on this server. Information like cell phone numbers for customer contact purposes and PINS used to confirm identities for phone support. There was no classified information like social security numbers, which is a good thing. It is also important top note that no recorded calls were held on this server either.

It appears that a former employee of the vendor changes the security policy on the server to allow for external access and then shared the link. Luckily for Verizon and for its customers the only person who accessed that link was a researcher who informed Verizon of the problem. In response to this both Verizon and the vendor in this use case, are investigating and ramping up security.

Lastly, the company said in a statement that, “Verizon is committed to the security and privacy of our customers. We regret the incident and apologize to our customers.”
