Tim Cook has just introduced the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus with a teaser video and then introduced Phill Schiller to give us the full details. This is the next generation of iPhone, with a new design that includes a glass back and multiple color options– Silver, Space Grey, and Gold.
It is made from an aerospace-grade aluminum alloy and a steel structure on the inside reinforces the glass back. They are also seals for water and dust resistance. You get a 5.5-inch and 4.7-inch Retina HD display with high color accuracy and a wide color gamut. Tru Tone Display is also finally available on an iPhone now. There also stereo speakers from the ear piece and the bottom of the phone.
Powering the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus is the A11 Bionic Chip, which sounds awesome. It has two performance core, four high-efficiency cores, and all of this is managed by a 2nd generation core manager. An in-house Apple designed GPU is inside that delivers a 30% improvement in speed.
The iPhone 8 features a 12-megapixel camera lens with an all new sensor that has a new color filter and optical image stabilization. The iPhone 8 Plus gets two new 12-megapixel lenses with all new sensors that feature improved aperture. Building off of Portrait Mode, Apple is introducing Portrait Lightning and it uses Machine Learning to give you the perfect lighting. Even better it doesn’t happen after the fact, you can choose from different lighting effects and these aren’t filters.
Augmented Reality will also work incredibly well on the 8 and 8 Plus, as Phil Schiller put it these are the first devices designed for AR. Utilizing ARKit, developers can tap into the new Camera, sensors, and the A11 Bionic Chip.
LTE Advanced is supported on the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus along with Bluetooth 5.0. Apple is also, for the first time, including wireless charging on the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. Even better they are using the Qi Wireless Charging Standard, which means it should work with almost any of the wireless chargers on the market already.
The iPhone 8 will start at $699 and come in in 64GB and 256GB sizes. The iPhone 8 Plus will start at $799 and come in 64GB and 256GB sizes. Pre-orders will start on September 15th with a launch on September 22nd.
