Our friends over at LG have sent us the Sprint variant of the Optimus G! This is one of Sprint’s newest devices and LG’s flagship device. And you could say that it starts a new direction for LG. They found a great way to mix hardware, software, and design together that just looks amazing. We have already reviewed the Optimus G for AT&T, You Can See That Review By Clicking Here. There are differences between the AT&T and Sprint variant, and there is also an unlocked variant of the device. LG has a couple of devices on Sprint, they had the Viper 4G LTE which was the first 4G LTE device for the carrier and a eco-friendly device. If you look at these two devices the design is drastically different. Now, let’s dive into the LG Optimus G for Sprint.
Design
LG worked very hard on the design for the Optimus G, and while they are similar among the variants they are not the same. You still get the awesome crystal glass carbon fiber back on the Sprint variant. And it brings the quality of this device really to the next level. Especially when you compare it to past LG devices like Viper 4G LTE, which was a large device. But, the Optimus G is a very elegant device and is quite thin at just 0.33-inches thick. It weighs 5.11-ounces, so it does have some weight to it. You can most certainly feel it in your hand. It does fit the hand very well and while the back is prone to fingerprints and is smooth, it still provides a good grip. You have a 13 megapixel camera on the back of the device, and surpassingly the lens it self sticks out of the back a little bit. It’s just a little bump on the top left corner of the device. A LED flash, LG logo, speaker, and some information can be found on the back. That information would be your FCC ID, model number, and where it was made. You can find the headphone jack on the top of device and a micro USB port on the bottom. The volume rocker is on the left hand side, while your power/sleep button lives on the right hand side. The Sprint version does not have the power/sleep button that glows like the AT&T variant. The AT&T variant of the device had a micro SD card slot, but the Sprint variant does not. You will have no expandable storage on this variant of the device, and this may affect which carrier you go with. I would have like to seen the micro SD card and SIM card slot, but on all of the variants of the Optimus G. However, you can use applications like Box to store you data in the cloud. You also get 32GB of internal memory. Above the display you have an earpiece, LG logo, and a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera. Below the display you have 3 touch buttons that light up. These are you back, home, a menu buttons and are very useful. The phone feels really good in your hand and is a very elegant device, great job to LG and Sprint for the design.
Hardware
Here is a fact for you, the Optimus G is LG’s first smartphone with 4G LTE speeds and a Quad-Core processor. So what does this mean for the consumer? It means a super fast device with lighting fast speeds. I did experience those super fast speeds on AT&T’s variant, but as of now Sprint 4G LTE is still in a rollout stage and New Jersey doesn’t yet have coverage. In the meantime, if you do not have 4G LTE from Sprint just yet, you will be running on their 3G network. And inside the Optimus G you have a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro Quad-Core processor with 2GB of RAM. Swiping through home screens, multitasking, opening and closing applications, powering on and off the device, and much more have all been super charged! During my testing the Optimus G for Sprint did not lag at all or slow down for even a second. It is by far one of the fastest devices on the market and may even be the fastest device I have tested. The Optimus G has a 4.7-inch True HD IPS Plus Display with a resolution of 768 X 1280! Colors look vibrant, images look real, and viewing angles are great. And it can be compared with that of the HTC EVO 4G LTE and Galaxy S III from Samsung! As I mentioned earlier there is no micro SD card slot on this device, so you are stuck with the 32GB of internal storage! And if this is not enough storage for you, DropBox or BOX cloud storage may be a good idea for you. The major difference between the AT&T variant and the Sprint, is that you get a 13 megapixel camera on the Sprint version. And I do have to say the 13 megapixel camera is just as good as the 8 megapixel camera on the AT&T version. But, I do not see that big difference between the two cameras on either device. At times the 13 megapixel cameras image quality is brighter and more vibrant. It records great video in 1080pHD and you the LED flash that will let you take great pictures and video in low lighting conditions. The Optimus G has a great 2100mAh battery that will last you the entire day! Overall, LG and Sprint hit a home run all the way out of the park with the hardware on the Optimus G!
Software
Now, the Sprint LG Optimus G is running Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich with a LG User Interface! I am hoping that an upgrade to Android 4.1 Ice Cream Sandwich is coming in the near future! Now, the AT&T variant had a good amount of pre-loaded applications out of the box. But this was not really an issue as you could uninstall some of them and you had a micro SD card slot. Out of the box on the Sprint variant you get the Google App Suite, Note Book, Google Play Suite, Polaris Office 4.0, Qualcomm Enhance Location Services, Google Shopper, Application Manager, File Manager, File Share, LG Tag+, Car Home, Smart Share, Sprint Zone, Sprint ID, Task Manager, Video Editor, Video Wiz, YouTube, and more! Thank you to Sprint and LG who kept the pre-loaded applications to a minimum on this device! You do get LG Tag+ because the Optimus G does have Near Field Communications built-in. This will let you set up and use Near Field Communications tags! And thanks to the 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro Quad-Core processor with 2GB of RAM the Optimus G is lighting fast. I did not have it slow down on me or lag at any time during my testing. It makes watching videos, playing games, and using the phone a great experience. A really cool feature of the Optimus G is that you can zoom in on live video, and this does not cause it buffer or get choppy. This is a really cool feature that lets you dive into the content of the video. You also get LG’s QuickMemo application which will let you take a screenshot and customize it, and then you can send or share it. LG’s user interface makes Android easier to use and still leaves plenty of room for customization. Sprint and LG did a great job with the software!
Bottom Line
The LG Optimus G for Sprint is a phenomenal device! It is personally one of the fastest devices I have ever reviewed and is most certainly one of the fastest devices on Sprint’s network. You get an awesome elegant design, that features a crystal black back, that is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 2.0! The device is super charged with a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro Quad-Core processor with 2GB of RAM and Sprint 4G LTE will be up and running soon. A clear 4.7-inch True HD IPS Plus Display, that will let you see from almost any angle. A great version of Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich with LG’s own twist on the operating system. A great 13 megapixel back camera with LED flash that records 1080pHD video. The LG Optimus G is clearly a great device that deserves to be held high on the market! The Sprint LG Optimus G will cost you $199.99 with a 2-year contract or $549.99 off contract. For More Information On The Sprint LG Optimus G, Please Click Here.
