NJTechReviews just got the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 and now we have our unboxing and first impressions to share with you! The Samsung Galaxy S 4 is currently available at AT&T, you can get it online or at an AT&T retail store. For the 16GB variant it will cost $199.99 with a 2-year contract, while the 32GB variant goes for $249.99 with a 2-year contract. It comes in your choice of either black mist or white frost as well. The Galaxy S 4 is entreating the market at a very competitive time, with the HTC One and BlackBerry Z10. For Samsung fans out there, your next generation Galaxy has arrived and now we have our first impressions for you!
For those of you who read our AT&T HTC One Review you know that we were super impressed with its design and the Galaxy S 4 has a nice design as well. However, it is not a full aluminum uni-body design like that on the HTC One. The body of the Galaxy S 4 is made out of poly carbonate and it feels like it was built well. The aluminum silver siding going around the device, gives it a pop of color. The back of the device has a carbon fiber like design to it, but in reality it is back cover that has a plastic poly carbonate build. Samsung and AT&T did a good job with keeping the device clean. There are only 3(three) logos on this device, above the display you have the Samsung logo and on the back you have a AT&T and a Galaxy S 4 logo. These are in a grey and silver color, it goes well with the black mist body color. Both your power/sleep button and volume rocker keep with the coloring of the siding and are slightly raised. Your volume rocker is on the left and the power/sleep button is on the right. Your headphone jack and secondary microphone can be found on the top of the device. Lastly, the micro USB port is on the bottom along with the main microphone. A nice feature of the S 4 is that it does have expandable storage via the form of a micro SD card. This is found on the back under the cover, along with the AT&T SIM card slot and the 2600mAh battery(NFC built-in). Above the display you get the 2 megapixel front facing camera along with some sensors, a LED notification light, and an ear piece. Below the display you have a physical home button with the back and menu touch buttons. The last piece of hardware on the back would be the 13 megapixel camera with LED flash. The design is very similar to than of the Note II and does seem like a smaller version, but it is more rounded than the Galaxy S III. It is not too thick at 7.99 millimeters thick and comes in at 4.59 ounces.
From my small amount of testing so far the hardware on the Galaxy S 4 performs well. The 5-inch Super AMOLED HD 1920 x 1080 441 pixels per inch display is very vibrant and clear. Images and webpages look great on it and reading text on the display is very clear as well. The 441 pixels per inch really do perform well and when it is paired with the Super AMOLED HD display it make for a great combination. The 1.9GHz quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM keeps the device going. Switching between applications happens quickly and it is comparable to other devices like the HTC One. I did some brief testing with Air Gesture and it is a very neat feature, while it does not work through out the entire operating system, it is pretty cool to be able to move the webpage up and down with your hand that is hovering above the display. Smart Scroll is hit or miss during my brief testing, but I may not be using it 100% correctly. However, these are the ground breaking features that may make the Galaxy S 4 a “life companion”.
These are my first impressions of the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 and it is a nice device. The design is nice and fits in with the rest of the Galaxy family. Even though it is large device at around 5-inches, it still does fit nicely in the hand. I am impressed with the display and it’s very vibrant colors. The quad-core processor certainly keeps the S 4 moving. You can see my unboxing video below and stay tuned for the full review on NJTechReviews soon!
