Our friends over at SodaStream have sent us the Genesis for us to review. SodaStream is the leader in the market of home drink makers and the Genesis is one of their most popular models. Any of their makes have a very simple goal to carbonate the water, after that you add your flavor. Then you can enjoy the drink of your choosing. Will the SodaStream Genesis be the next device in your kitchen? We will answer that in our full review, which begins now!
Setup
The SodaStream Genesis maker has a very unique and easy setup. In the box you will get a 60 liter carbonator bottle and this contains CO2 in the bottle. From there you will simply just slide that into the unit. The only button on the Genesis is the push to carbonate button. You get 2(two) Carbonating Bottles with the unit as well, simply fill the bottle of choosing with water. We would recommend have the water be chilled in the fridge, as it makes for better taste. Simply screw the bottle to the Genesis, this is found right under the top of the unit. Then you will push the carbonation button until it buzzes, then you have carbonated water. This is also known as seltzer.
Design
The SodaStream Genesis has a very simple and plain design. It can fit in with any environment of any kitchen. It comes available in either black or red, we reviewed the red variant. It is very light weight and portable as well, plus no power is needed. This makes it very portable, so for instance if you are having a barbecue outside you can make you sparkling water on the deck. If you spill, there is a tray on the bottom. This makes for easy cleanup. Overall, SodaStream did a great job with the design of the Genesis.
In terms of the design of the bottles, they look like smaller reusable variant of the bottles of soda you can buy at your local retailer. They are dishwasher friendly, which makes for easy cleaning. They have a nice design of bubbles and a soda stream logo on them as well. They hold up quite well, durability is important with these as they will be used quite a bit. If you need a few more, you can get them from your local retailer as well.
Carbonator
The 60 liter carbonation tank was the hardest part of the entire unit. It takes a few seconds to figure out how to put it inside the unit and how to properly make it carbonate the perfect amount. As the buzzer did not sound on time for the first few tries. Rest assured, once it got working it worked well. The carbonator is the main piece of the unit, this provides the bubbles and fizz in your drink. This is also where you will have to visit your local store or order something online. The carbonator only holds enough CO2 for 60 liters of drinks and it does run out eventually. You will have to recycle the one that you currently have and then go out and buy a new one. This where the unit can become a little pricey, but it will keep your drink lively.
Taste
There are many different flavors available that you mix into your carbonated bottles. Keep in mind that you do this after you have carbonated the water. Some of these flavors are name brands and some are designed off of name brands. SodaStream is causing some trouble for Pepsi and Coca Cola. However, SodaStream flavors do have fewer calories and are generally healthier than the name brands you would buy in the store.
SodaStream offers regular flavors and diet flavors, as well as some made by Kool Aid, Country Time, and others. There also flavors made by MyWater and flavors that taste like energy drink, sparkling teas. and more. Out of the box you should get some sample flavors, from there you can find the ones you like. Of course when you use no flavors at all, you have sparkling water or seltzer. While the flavors are not the exact same as the name brands, they are more generic but then again are more natural. For instance the cola flavor does not taste exactly like Coca Cola or Pepsi, it is more natural and not as refined. Of course you refine it self your, by the mixing style you use and how long you mix it for. You will find a way that makes it taste good for you. The Country Time flavors are the classic lemonade mixtures you will find in the store. These tastes stay pretty correct, for the most part, and are similar to the mixes you buy in the store.
Bottom Line
The SodaStream Genesis is a great drink maker, that will let you find a drink that is good for you. The thing with SodaStream is that while it is more eco-friendly and will save you money over time, there is the up front cost. The flavors have an average price of around $10.00, but they can be replaced quite easily. The carbonators are more pricey at around $30.00 per refill or new bottle. The SodaStream Genesis unit itself starts at $99.99 and you can get extra flavors depending on which package you get. Overall, the SodaStream is a nice device to have. Even for just making seltzer it is a great device and the ability to add flavors the way you like, is nice to have. I would recommend you check out the SodaStream Genesis, as it would be nice to have in your kitchen. For More Information On The SodaStream Genesis, Please Click Here.
