Our friends over at Ubisoft have sent us Flashback for us to review. As many of you may know Flashback was originally released in 1992. It’s back for its 20th anniversary and it still stays true to its original story. The original core creators and team were back for this remake. You will be assuming the role of Conrad B. Hart and are back to save the world, but we don’t want to give too much away. The game stays true to its roots, but takes advantage of the new consoles and what they have to offer. So, was it worth it too bring Flashback back after 20 years? We will answer that in our full review, which begins right now!
Graphics
From 1992 to 2013 there have been many enhancements, the consoles can do more and developers love to take advantage of this. The team behind Flashback wanted to give the game an upgrade to its current paint job. You will see the graphics right from the main menu, in fact I thought the game began right when I go to this menu. You see the setup for the game as well, the multiple levels and your character Conrad. You can see the color definition and the clear view from this vantage point. The cars flying, the lights flickering, and then the camera angle swipes down and you see some enemies with weapons. As you, Conrad, are hiding behind a wall. From there the menu options will open up. Even while you are playing around with the menu the graphics and sound are still going.
The cut scenes are done very nicely, even though you do have the option to skip these scenes I wouldn’t suggest skipping them. You can see the detail that was put into each scene here and the quality looks great. From the motion to the realistic designs of the surroundings. It fits the time of the game, both with the clothes and the surroundings you are in. From the lighting to matching the graphics with the audio, they did a great job.
When you are in the campaign you will see the set up for the game and while I will dive more into the gameplay int he section below, the graphics work well here as well. It is done on different tiered levels, and you will be jumping, climbing, and falling. It really is an adventure action game. In the first scene you are in the jungle and you see the environment. From collecting hollo-cubes, weapons, to health, it encompasses all of the action game necessities. The graphics compliment the gameplay, this is key to making a great game.
Gameplay
Flashback has kept with its roots but, has updated it’s gameplay as well. Everything seems much smoother and more correctly done. When jumping for instance you have to correctly judge the distance, rather than just running across and jumping. As you may end up falling to a level below. This would then cause you to get injured and after a couple of falls you need to get a medical pack. These are scattered across the map. The game requires a lot of exploring and figuring out puzzles. When you are given a task, you have to figure out how to get there. From hoping up and down cliffs, to thinking about the map. After going back and forth over the same tracks sometimes, you will realize that you can use your weapons and gadgets that you have complied to your advantage. Knock down a wall and another part of the path has been uncovered. With Flashback in order to succeed you will have to think and know your surroundings. This changes up the action adventure category just a little bit, but it makes for a very entertaining game that pulls you in.
Bottom Line
Flashback is a very nice action adventure game. If you played the originally, there is no reason why you shouldn’t get this updated version. For those who have not yet experience Flashback, you will like this updated version. From improved graphics to smoother and more enhanced gameplay, they are taking advantage of the Xbox 360. It not just an adventure, you have to figure out the correct way to get some where, while at the same time defending yourself and eliminating enemies. It is both a puzzle, adventure, and action game that will make you think and wonder. Similar to Spec Ops: The Line, a game that makes you think to get the job done. With a price of $10 if Flashback interests you, I would go for it. Flashback is available in the Xbox Live Arcade today, August 21, 2013. We would like to thank Ubisoft for providing us with “Flashback(Xbox 360)” for us to review.
