The Ultimate Smartphone
With technology rivaling the latest HD TV’s, the DROID DNA by HTC is the first smartphone to feature a true 1080p HD super LCD 3 display with Corning® Gorilla® Glass 2 protection. It boasts an extraordinary 440 pixels per inch (PPI) on a 5-inch screen for unprecedented in-hand HD experiences that delivers the maximum pixel clarity available on a smartphone.
Designed to accentuate the incredible display, the deep black, soft-touch back is understated, with the exception of a metallic red camera bezel, while the red microgrill pattern of the sidewalls hint at the phone’s DROID heritage and the power inside. The beautifully crafted smartphone feels thinner than other devices of a similar size as the edges of the curved back taper to a mere 4mm for a comfortable feel in the hand or pocket.
The Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ S4 Pro processor, featuring a quad-core 1.5 GHz CPU and high-performance GPU, paired with America’s largest 4G LTE network from Verizon Wireless and a full 2G of RAM enable the seamless use of multiple apps simultaneously. With HTC Sense® 4+ and Android™ 4.1.1 (Jelly Bean), you get great software experiences including Google Now. HTC Sense 4+ offers a wealth of easy-to-use and customizable features bringing highly sought after personalization to your phone and placing the most important content front and center. With an 8-megapixel f/2.0 28mm wide-angle lens, 5-level automatic flash, backside illuminated sensor (BSI), and superfast autofocus, you’ll capture amazing moments without the worry of missing a single one. Instead of choosing between photos and video, HTC VideoPic™ allows you to capture video and still images at the same time. And by simply holding the shutter button, Continuous Shooting takes multiple photos at up to four frames per second to catch all the action.
It also includes a new best-in-class 2.1-megapixel, f/2.0, 88-degree, ultra-wide angle, front-facing camera that allows more to be captured in self-portraits, and up to four people for group shots. Auto Portrait makes it easier to take photos of yourself and your friends with automatic face detection and a countdown timer so you can focus on your pose and not the shutter button. Capable of capturing 1080p HD video, the front-facing camera also provides a sharper picture during video chat.
Authentic Sound
The DROID DNA by HTC has a unique, 2.55-volt, built-in headset amplifier and dedicated amp for the external rear-speaker to help boost the audio signal to deliver crystal clear sound with less distortion, even at maximum volume. Our friends over at Verizon have sent us the Verizon Droid Incredible 4G LTE for us to review. The Incredible brand has become a part of the Verizon family, from the original to the Incredible 2, and now to the Incredible 4G LTE. The brand has progressed along the way bringing new capabilities, many thought that the HTC Rezound was going to be the next Incredible, but Verizon and HTC decide to make it separate. But now we have the next Incredible and many have been waiting. But with all of the other new devices coming out from Verizon, should you go for the Droid Incredible 4G LTE? We will answer that in the full review which beings right now!
Design
Any owner of the other Droid Incredible owners, will find the design of the device quite similar to past models. It has the familiar back design, with a little bit of it popping out and a nice compact design. This is somewhat of the taste of the HTC One series for Verizon, but it is customized for the carrier. And I have to say the end result is a device that has a design that will make the customer happy. The Incredible 4G LTE comes in at 0.46 inches thick and feels very comfortable to hold in the hand. It fit’s in the hand perfectly, this is thanks to its compact design, it is 4.8 inches tall and 2.4 inches wide, so it should fit in most people’s hand perfectly. And while it does have some weight to it, it only comes in at 4.66 ounces. So, while it is certainly not as thin and light as the Droid RAZR, it is not the heaviest and thickest device on the market. The back of the device has both a textured and smooth part to it. On the back you have a 4G LTE logo, Beats Audio logo, HTC logo, speaker, and a 8 megapixel camera with LED flash. One thing to note is that HTC decided to not give the Verizon Droid Incredible 4G LTE the HTC ImageSense chip. When taking the back cover off, be very careful. As it has NFC(Near Field Communications) chip built-in and has some connectors built-in. Under the cover you will find the 1700mAh battery, and on the left hand side you will find the micro SIM and micro SD card port. The right hand side is where you can find the volume rocker and micro USB port can be found on the left hand side. The bottom of the device is where your main microphone is located and on the top you can find the power/sleep button, headphone jack, and 2nd microphone. The power/sleep button is not sensitive at all, it does require a hard push to make sure the phone will unlock or turn on. Above the screen you will find the earpiece, Verizon logo, and a VGA front facing camera. Below the screen you have 3 touch capacitive buttons, those being back, home, and multitasking. The earpiece, power/sleep button, and camera lens are all outlined in red. The Beats Audio logo on the back is in red as well, this adds some color to the device. Both 4G LTE and Verizon logo are silver, and the HTC logo is engraved into the back cover. I do really like the design of the device, it looks nothing like a One series device which is important. It is a device of its own, and it fits right into the Droid Incredible family.
Network
Now, one of the biggest changes from the Droid Incredible 4G LTE to past models, is that it runs on Verizon’s 4G LTE Network. You get access the nations largest 4G LTE network and you will get the insanely fast speeds that come with it. During our testing we had anywhere from 3-5 bars of service and we were on 4G LTE for data. We got some insanely fast speeds both on the upload and on the download. We use the “SPEEDTEST.NET” application for our speed test. You can see our results here:
NJTechReviews Verizon Droid Incredible 4G LTE Speed Test Results
These are some of the fastest speeds we have gotten on Verizon’s 4G LTE Network. Our faster download speed was 30.78Mbps, while our slowest speed was 13.83Mbps. Keep in mind that these speeds are super fast for the network, and we are covered well by Verizon’s 4G LTE network. Actual speeds in your area may be different depending on coverage. Our quickest upload speed was 16.72Mbps and our slowest was 1.24Mbps. Overall, I was very impressed with the speeds we were able to obtain on the Droid Incredible 4G LTE that runs on Verizon’s 4G LTE network.
Hardware
The Verizon Droid Incredible 4G LTE is not the carriers best device, it does not have the fastest processor, the most space, or the best screen. But, it is a great compact device that features some great hardware. For starters you already have speed from Verizon’s 4G LTE network, but you also have a very speedy operating system. This is thanks to the 1.2GHz Dual Core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor with 1GB RAM. Switching between applications, swiping through home screens, opening or closing applications, streaming video, works really well on the device. It does not get hung up on applications and if for some reason it does, it last for a brief second or two. In terms of internal storage you 8GB, but it really is around 5GB of space out of the box. You also have a micro SD card, that can hold up to a 32GB micro SD card. Having the option to expand storage on any smartphone is always important. No free Dropbox storage on the Verizon Droid Incredible 4G LTE. You get a 4 inch Super LCD qHD display with a resolution of 960 X 540. While this is not a full HD display like what is found on the Rezound, this screen is solid. Viewing angles are good, the colors are vibrant, and most images look life-like. When viewing text on the display it is very clear and crisp. Overall, HTC did a fine job with the display on this device. One major change from this device to a HTC One series device is that, the HTC ImageSense chip is not included on the Verizon Droid Incredible 4G LTE. I was very surprised by this decision, and you can tell a difference between photos take on this device in comparison to device that has the HTC ImageSense chip. Instead you just get a 8 megapixel back camera with LED flags. You can tell the difference in most low-light shots, while it will not ruin the photo all together, you can tell that the device with the ImageSense chip’s quality is better. Most customers will enjoy the camera a lot, and it is a welcome addition to the device. You still have many of the great features that the camera application had on a device with the chip, meaning that you can snap a photo while recording video, get great “Instagram” like effects, self timer, and much more. And then finally the back camera can record video in 1080pHD quality with around 30 frames per second. And you can have it auto focus during video recording or touch the screen to choose where you want to focus. Most users will love the back camera on the Droid Incredible 4G LTE. The front facing VGA camera is pretty good, video calling on 4G LTE is great and you can take some nice “selfies”/self-portraits. The hardware on the device is very nice, when thinking about who the device is made for.
Software
The Verizon Droid Incredible 4G LTE is running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with HTC Sense 4.0 . And if you have seen any other device with HTC Sense 4.0 you will find the experience very similar. Out of the box it is running the Verizon Droid theme, which gives you a Droid Eye background and come other features. You still have access to all of HTC’s great widgets like the clock and weather widget. Verizon decided not to pre-load that many applications, with that being said you still do get some applications. Some of these applications are Amazon Kindle, Amazon MP3, Google App Suite, Verizon App Store, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Let’s Golf 3, Mobile Hotspot, Video Editor, My Verizon Mobile, NFL Mobile, Real Racing 2, Slacker Radio, Setup, Slingbox, TuneIn Radio, V Cast Tunes, Verizon Video, Voice Mail, VZ Navigator, Weather, and much more. One recently launched application by Verizon Wireless is “GameTanium”. It is your one stop shop for the latest and greatest games. And it is exclusive to the Verizon App Store, and as you may have imagined that is exclusive to Verizon Wireless devices. For $5.99 a month, you get access to a wide-variety of games, and more are added weekly. These games are all advertisement free, and you have unlimited access to the games. You browse the different games through the GameTanium and application, then once you find the game your download the games you want. There are over 100 games for smartphones and around 50 for tablets. You get a 3-day free trial of GameTanium, and after that it will ask you if you want to pay for it. It costs $5.99 a month, and it is billed to your monthly bill from Verizon Wireless. Our hands-on with GameTanium is coming soon, and our full review will arrive soon after that. The software on the Droid Incredible 4G LTE compliments the device very much.
Bottom Line
The Verizon Droid Incredible 4G LTE is a great smart phone. This device packs many great features into a small and compact device, that comes in at just $149.99 with a 2-year contract. Verizon Wireless has a great line up of Android devices, and the Droid Incredible has a spot to call its own. If you want an awesome design, access to Verizon 4G LTE, a fast device thanks to it’s 1.2GHz Dual-Core Processor with 1GB of RAM, a solid 4 inch Super LCD qHD display, a nice 8 megapixel back camera, an awesome operating system, and much more than you have found your device. If you want a larger screen Verizon has the Galaxy S III for you and if you want a cleaner or purer version of Android the Galaxy Nexus is still available. However, the Droid Incredible 4G LTE should be considered an option if you are looking for a new Verizon smartphone. The Droid Incredible 4G LTE for Verizon is available and will cost you $149.99 with a 2-year contract or $499.99 with no contract. Our friends over at Verizon have sent us the Verizon Droid 4 for us to review. Yes, it is the only “Droid” smartphone that has a slide out keyboard and it is the thinnest 4G LTE smartphone with a slide-out keyboard. It was unveiled at CES 2012, after many months of it being leaked out. It combines the best of both worlds, a touch screen and a physical keyboard. Ah but, does it live up to all of they hype? We will answer that in our full review, so now let’s dive into the full review of the Verizon Droid 4!
Design
The Verizon Droid 4 has a nice design. It comes in at only half of an inch thick, so it is really not that bad. On the top of your device you will find the power/sleep button and headphone jack. Your volume rocker can be found on the right hand side. The left hand side is home to your mini HDMI port and the micro USB port. On the back of the device you with the Verizon logo, 4G LTE logo, Motorola logo, speaker, and the 8 mega-pixel HD camera with LED flash. If you take the back cover off you will find the micro SD card slot and your Verizon 4G LTE SIM Card slot. There is no removable battery on this device but, it is in there somewhere. Towards the right hand bottom corner on the inside, you will find some pins. I am assuming that Verizon will be releasing an extend battery for this device and that is where it will be plugged in. We will let you know if Verizon or Motorola does come out with a such an accessory. To open the back cover you do need a special key and some strength. The back door itself feels very breakable, so do not handle it too much. On the front of the device right above the screen you will find the Motorola logo, a earpiece, and a VGA front facing camera. Under the screen you will find the 4 classic Android buttons (menu, home, back and search) and the Verizon Logo. Sliding out from the left hand side of the device is your laser cut full QWERTY keyboard. We will get into that later. Around the devices edges you will find a nice silver finish, while the rest of the phone is a blackish grey. The back of the phone has some grip to it, this way it won’t fall out of your hand when you are using the device.
Keyboard
Now, the full QWERTY keyboard is what the Droid 4 is famous for. It is the thinnest 4G LTE phone on the market that has a slide-out keyboard. This is by far the best slide-out keyboard smartphone on the market, it make’s the QWERTY keyboard on the Verizon Samsung Stratosphere, look pretty bad. This slide function of the keyboard if very smooth, and it does click when it is fully out. And it won’t get pushed back in by accident, you have to use some force to make it go back in and this adds more durability to the device itself. Now, once the keyboard is out the screen will automatically turn to horizontal mode. If you tape one button it will immediately start searching through your contacts, the web, and more. Keep in mind that you are on Verizon 4G LTE so it will not take long at all to see those results you have been waiting for. The keys themselves are both slightly raised and back light. Making them very easy to use and to see at night. They Android buttons are not in key format, but worry not as they are just a few steps away at the side of the screen. However, since they are capacitive touch buttons they do not turn when the keyboard slide’s out. This is something I would have liked to seen on this device, so hopefully with the Droid 5 we will see it. Congrats to Verizon and Motorola for a great job with the keyboard on this guy.
Hardware
Now, Motorola did not just make the keyboard good on the Droid 4 they also gave it some other nice features. For starters it has a 1.2GHz Dual-Core Processor, 1GB of RAM, and Verizon 4G LTE speeds. So it is appropriate to say that this device is very fast. There is zero lag time when swiping between screens or opening the keyboard. As with any device everyone once in a while it may take a little while longer, but for the most part the Droid 4 does very well. The display is where Motorola could have done much better. It has a 4.0 inch qHD display with a resolution of 960 X 540. This is also known as a PenTile display, but it also has a scratch and scrape resistant glass on it. The screen does not perform very well, the colors are not rich and the contrast of the display could be better. However, the viewing angles are very good. It has a 8GB of internals storage and it does have a micro SD card slot that holds up to a 32GB micro SD card. On the back you have an 8 megapixel HD camera with LED flash. It does record video in full 1080pHD quality. On the front you have a VGA front-facing camera.
Network
The Droid 4 runs on Verizon’s insanely fast 4G LTE network. Call quality on the Droid 4 was great and there was almost no static. Both us and the person on the other end, had no issues hearing one another. In our area were we tested this device we had anywhere from 3-5 bars of service. Please keep in mind that Verizon’s 4G LTE service in your area may vary. If no 4G LTE is available it will connect to Verizon’s 3G Network. We did run speediest on the Droid 4 via the “SPEEDTEST.NET” application. You can see our results from the test below.
Our speed test were very good with Verizon’s 4G LTE Network. Our lowest download speed was 7.96Mbps, while our highest was an awesome 20.75Mbps. Our lowest upload speed was 3.98Mbps, while our highest was a good 11.82Mbps. Keep in mind that your data connection varies on how strong Verizon’s 4G LTE Network is in your area. The Verizon Droid 4′s Networks is great!
Operating System
The Verizon Droid 4 By Motorola is currently running Android 2.3 Gingerbread with a Motorola User Interface. However both Verizon and Motorola have said that Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will be coming to the Droid 4 and it’s close relatives the Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX. No date has been given but, I’m assuming it will be sometime in the near future. In terms of pre-loaded apps on this device, there are a bunch of them. They are Amazon Kindle, Verizon Apps, Blockbuster, Google App Suite, YouTube, Device Setup, Emergency Alerts, Flash Player Settings, GoToMeeting, Help Center, Guided Tours, Let’s Gold 2, Madden NFL 12, Android Market, Mobile Hotspot, MOG Music, MOTOACTV, MOTOPRINT, Music, My Accounts, My Verizon Mobile Netflix, NFL Mobile, QuickOffice, Slacker, Slingbox, Smart Actions, Verizon Video,VZNavigator, VCast Tones, and more. Overall, the app selection is very similar to that of the Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX. The operating system and applications run very fast on the Droid 4. This thanks to it’s 1.2GHz Dual-Core Processor and 1GB of RAM.
Bottom Line
The Verizon Droid 4 By Motorola is a great phone! It is by far the best slider on the market. It runs on Verizon’s insanely fast 4G LTE Network. It has speed by itself as well with a 1.2GHz Dual-Core processor and 1GB of RAM. It features an 8 megapixel HD camera with LED flash on the back. The slide-out keyboard come sin very handy, is says to use, is backlight, and much more! The only bad part is that the screen is not the best out there, but it does get the job done a good amount of the time. If you’re looking at a new phone and you are on Verizon be sure to check out and consider the Droid 4. The Verizon Droid 4 by Motorola retails for $199.99 with a 2-year contract. Without a contract the Droid 4 will cost you $549.99. Currently at the time of this review if you buy the Verizon Droid 4 online you can get it for $99.99 with a 2-year contract. You Can Get The Verizon Droid 4 By Motorola, By Clicking Here. At the time of this review Verizon is offering an awesome deal, “Twice The Data. For The Same Price”. You Can Get More Info On This Deal, By Clicking Here. We would like to thank Verizon for providing us with a copy of the “Verizon Droid 4 By Motorola”.
Our friends over at Verizon have sent us the Droid RAZR MAXX for us to review. Most people who bought the original Droid RAZR, may be a little mad. The only difference between the Droid RAZR and the Droid RAZR MAXX is that the MAXX features a 21 hour battery. But, is that enough to upgrade, read on to find out. Now, let’s get started with the full review of the Verizon Droid RAZR MAXX!
Design
The Verizon Droid RAZR MAXX features the same design as the Droid RAZR with only some minor differences. It is thicker, but not buy much. It is still thicker than some of the other phones on the market. It comes in at 8.99 millimeters thick, while the RAZR comes in at 7.1 millimeter. So while it’s not the thinnest 4G LTE smartphone on the market, it is most certainly not the thickest phone on the market. The back of device is made of Kevlar, which gives you more protection. On top of the screen you have the Motorola logo and a 1.3 mega-pixel front facing camera. Under the screen you will find the Verizon logo and the touch Android buttons. On the back you have the 8 mega-pixel HD camera with LED Flash, speaker, Motorola, Verizon, and 4G LTE logos. On the right hand-side you will find the power/sleep button and the volume rocker. On the left hand side you will find, under a cover, the 4G LTE SIM card slot and micro SD card slot. On the top of the device you have the headphone jack, micro USB port, and the HDMI port. The Droid RAZR MAXX is currently only available in black, but more colors are always a possibility. As many of you known the Droid RAZR is available in black, white, and purple now.
Battery
The Battery on the Droid RAZR MAXX is the biggest feature of the phone. The Droid RAZR MAXX’s battery life has continued to amaze me since day one. I had it working for a solid 20 hours of phone calls, streaming video, and more. I have only charged it twice since receiving it and it blows me away every time. This is also with full brightness and it doesn’t bring the devices to battery to a fault what so ever. It has a 3,300mAh battery, this doubles the original battery of the Droid RAZR. I was expecting amazing battery life. And while it says it gets 21 Hours, we pushed it and we got around 20 Hours. Maybe if you don’t use it as much as we did or if you had Motorola Smart Actions turned on, you could have gotten 21 Hours. Either way if you need a large battery look no where but the Droid RAZR MAXX.
Hardware
The Droid RAZR MAXX is identical to the RAZR besides the battery and the thickness. So we will be brief here in the Hardware section. In terms of a battery you get a 3,300mAh battery inside. For network you have access to Verizon’s 4G LTE Network, which is insanely fast. The screen is also the same, I seems like Verizon and Motorola missed the chance of making another huge and revolutionary device by not improving the screen. It still features 4.3 inch Super AMOLED qHD Display, with a resolution of 960 X 450. While the screen is good we have seen better on many other devices. It has a 1.2GHz Dual-Core Processor with 1GB of RAM. It has a total of 32GB of Space, 16GB internal and a 16GB microSD card. So space is no issue on this device. I would have liked to see some hardware improvements but, they are nowhere to be found. Maybe in a future version of the device they will be added.
Operating System
As you may have expected the Droid RAZR MAXX has an identical operating system to that of the Droid RAZR. With that begin said we will be brief in the Operating System section as well. It is running the same build and firmware as the Droid RAZR, it seems as if Verizon and Motorola are holding stuff back from us. It is running Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread with the Motorola User Interface. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is coming, it will also be coming to the Droid RAZR. Pre-loaded apps are for the most part the same as well. You get Amazon Kindle, Verizon Apps, BlockBuster, Google App Suite, Calculator, Calendar, Camera, Device Setup, Emergency Alerts, Flash Player Settings, GoToMeeting, Guided Tours, Help Center, IM, Let’s Golf 2, Madden NFL 12, Android Market, Messaging, Mobile Hotspot, MOG Music, MOTOACTV, MOTOPRINT, Music, My Accounts, My Files, My Gallery, My Music, My Verizon Mobile, Netflix, NFL Mobile, Quickoffice, Slacker, Slingbox, Smart Actions, Social Location, Social Network, Task Manager, V CAST Tones, Verizon Video, Video Surf, Voice Commands, Voice Search, VZ Navigator, and YouTube. It comes with a good amount of items pre-loaded and if that isn’t enough you can get more in the Android Market. One thing that is different is that thanks to the larger battery you can use the operating system and apps more on one full charge than the original RAZR.
Camera
We did not give you a camera test for the original Droid RAZR. Ah but, since the cameras are identical on the Droid RAZR MAXX you get the camera test now! The camera app is exactly the same as the RAZR’s. In terms of the front facing camera, it is 1.3 mega-pixels. It is there for taking picture of yourself and/or selfless and video calling with your friends and family. The quality is okay, and is what we would expect for a front-facing camera. On the back is where this bad boy shines. It has an 8 mega-pixel HD camera, that put the Galaxy Nexus camera to shame. It records HD in 1080ph HD and if you take photos or video at night, no worries thanks to it’s LED flash. You can see our video camera test below!
Bottom Line
The Droid RAZR MAXX is pretty much a better version of the Droid RAZR. It’s biggest feature is a huge 21 hour battery life, we only received around 20 hours while testing. It still features the 8 mega-pixel back camera, the not so great display, 1.2GHz Dual-Core Processor, and more. However, I feel it is one of the best phones in Verizon’s lineup. So what if it adds some more thickness having a 21 Hour battery tops it all. However, the Droid RAZR MAXX leaves the original Droid RAZR buyers in the dust. It does have the best battery of any phone currently on the market and for that one reason you should certainly consider it if you are looking for a new Verizon smartphone. Verizon is throwing to many RAZR devices at the consumer. I would have just come out with the MAXX and the first place. However, that is Verizon’s decision and not mine, but hopefully you are happy with your RAZR as it is a great phone. Sure we would have liked to see improvements with screen and other items, but what we got was an awesome new battery. It will cost you $299.99 with a 2-year contract from Verizon. Without a contract it will cost you a total of $649.99 . You Can Get Your Verizon Droid RAZR MAXX, By Clicking Here. At the time of this review Verizon is offering an awesome deal, “Twice The Data. For The Same Price”. You Can Get More Info On This Deal, By Clicking Here. We would like to thank Verizon Wireless for providing us with a copy of the “Verizon Wireless Droid RAZR MAXX By Motorola”.
