Our friends over at HTC have sent us the HTC Radar 4G for us to review. It is one of their newest Windows Phones to hit the market. It is running the latest Windows Phone Operating System, Mango. Now, let’s get started with the full review of the HTC Radar 4G!
Hardware and Design
The HTC Radar 4G is one of the newly announced HTC Windows Phones. While it is not as feature rich as the HTC Titan, it still has some good hardware in it. On top of the phone you have your power/sleep button and a headphone jack. On the left hand side you have a micro USB port. On the right hand side you have your volume rocker and camera shutter button. Under the screen you have your back, home, and search buttons. On top of the screen you have your HTC logo, T-Mobile Logo, and front-facing camera. On the back you have a speaker, HTC logo, Windows Phone Logo, and a 5 mega-pixel camera with LED Flash. The colors of the phone are silver and white, the silver part is mostly found on the back. You have a 3.8-inch WVGA LCD capacitive touch screen with a resolution of 800 x 480. The phone is quite fast, this is thanks to its 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. It has 8GB of internal storage, with no microSD card slot. This means you can not expand your storage. The battery is a 520 mAh Lithium ion battery. You cannot access the battery. You only have access to the T-Mobile Sim Card. Going back to build quality of the phone, it is an aluminum unibody design. It has a white finish to it. Overall, the HTC Radar 4G’s hardware and design are great.
Operating System
The HTC Radar 4G is running Windows Phone 7.5 Mango. It is a great operating system, it’s simplicity makes it user-friendly to all. It is a very clean design and HTC did not make too many customizations to it. You have a full HTML 5 Web Browsing experience in Windows Phone 7.5. The web browser on Windows Phone is Internet Explorer 9, it runs great on the HTC Radar 4G. There is a setup guide built into the phone, so it will guide you through how to set it up. This makes it very simple to use. In terms of HTC customizations, they are helpful. Let’s start off with HTC Hub. It is basically a gorgeous Weather App. It has the same great graphics and sound effects that are found in HTC Sense for the android users out there. It displays your local weather with a beautiful graphic. You can also add other locations and it will have a list of them for you in the app. If you click on one of them, it will open it up. It will show you the weather conditions there. HTC Hub is not just weather, if you swipe the page to the right you will find Stocks and a RSS Reader. You can customize which stocks and websites you would like to see. HTC Hub is a great feature to Windows Phone 7.5 . HTC Watch also comes pre-loaded on the HTC Radar 4G. It does take some time for it to start-up the app. It is where you can buy or rent movies. You can also watch trailers for the movies that are current available to purchase or to rent. HTC Hub can be compared to Samsung Media Hub. In terms of pre-loaded apps from T-Mobile all I could find was T-Mobile TV and My Account. Other pre-loaded apps include Netflix, Notes, Office, Slacker Radio, and TeleNav GPS Navigation. I would also like to highlight the Xbox Live/Games App. If you are a fan of Xbox like me, you will love this app. You can sign in with your Xbox Live ID and you can view your Profile, Achievements, Avatar, Friends, and much more. Also, if you play games on the Windows Phone you will get achievements for them as well. I definitely recommend checking out the Xbox Live/Games App if you have a Windows Phone. Let’s talk about the Camera App on the HTC Radar 4G. You can access it by just clicking the camera shutter button on the left hand side on the phone. From there it will open up the app. It is a very simple app, on the main screen you can switch it to take a photo or record a video, zoom in or out, switch to the other camera and you can access settings. In settings you can choose the Scene mode, Effects, Panorama, Burst, the Resolution, Flash, White Balance, Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Sharpness, ISO, Face Detection, and much more! It is like having an actual camera on your phone. The camera takes great pictures as well. Overall, the Windows Phone Mango Operating System runs great on the HTC Radar 4G!
Bottom Line
The HTC Radar 4G is a great phone. It’s only drawback is that it does not have any expandable memory. I would have liked it more if I knew that we could add more space if needed . Access to the battery would have been good as well. While it is not as feature rich as some of the other Windows Phones on the market, it definitely is a good phone. It has a great operating system and a boat load of great features. I would recommend the HTC Radar 4G to anyone looking for a simple and powerful Windows Phone. The HTC Radar 4G will cost only $99.99 with a 2-year contract or $399.99 with no contract. The HTC Radar 4G is available for purchase. You Can Get Your T-Mobile HTC Radar 4G, By Clicking Here.
