Google’s popular Android operating system has been wildly popular on smartphones and tablets. As we move into the wearable world, smart watches and other smart devices are coming about. Sony has there smart watches and Samsung has a boat load of devices. But they are not all built off of a standard operating system. Incoming is Android Wear, an operating system designed for wearables, which will allow for new experiences. It is still core Android, but this new SDK and OS, allow you to make the experience both richer and better. It opens Android up to a whole new category, that already has a lot of interest.
There are core features of Android that are in Android Wear, thus allowing you to have these great experiences. Also allowing technology to truly help you and enhance your life. Google Now is a big part of this, the virtual assistant on your smartphone comes in very handy. Whether you ask it for directions, to open an application, to take a note, or really anything. With “OK Google”, you can transfer this experience to your wrist via a smart watch or for that matter any device. On Android Wear you can use “OK Google” to call a cab, send a text, and more. Android Wear also can help you be active by tracking calories and real-time data. It can be the connection to your smartphone, for instance say you want to play a song on your Nexus 5 that’s charging in a different room. Tell the smart watch to start playing your music on your smartphone, as the whole OS is connected.
Google has already shared Android Wear with many companies like LG, Motorola, ASUS, and HTC. They also shared with chip manufactures like Intel, Qualcomm, Mediatek, and others. Not only are they working with the technology companies, but watch companies like Fossil. They are saying you can expect Android Wear watches to come this year. For developers, a preview of Android Wear is available today at developer.android.com/wear. This will help you get a head start with development, specifically with getting notifications to your watches.
2014 is getting even more excited, we have seen smart watches already. Now, that we have a standard operating system based off what many smartphone are running on, I think we will begin to see a lot more wearable devices. Specifically, a wearable smart watch coming later this year. For sure this years Google I/O Conference will be heavy on wearable news!
