Back in 2013 before season 5 of Archer premiered, I had the chance to interview Amber Nash and Lucky Yates. Since then, season 5 has premiered and a lot has changed, to put it simply. Amber and Lucky were trying to prepare both myself and our readers for that change with there answers to my many questions. Now, I had the chance to speak with Lucky Yates again as he was able to find time in his busy schedule. This time we discuss the secrets behind the Krieger clones and more, as season 5 comes to a close!
Krieger has been the focus or at least a larger part this season, especially since they went to San Marcos. Are you happy with the changes?
Of course! Who WOULDN’T be happy about more Krieger, and more Kriegers for that matter?
So where did the idea for the clones come from?
Adam Reed is an avid reader and film buff. I assume it all goes back to The Boys From Brazil, but I’ve actually never asked him.
I’m assuming you voiced all of them, did it ever get confusing?
It never got confusing because we recorded each Krieger separately. So I’d do all of our Krieger’s lines first, then Clone 1, then 2, then 3. Laughs, Clone Bones, all of it. That way I could juuuuuuuust alter them enough to keep them straight in my head. BTW, it probably never reads, but Clone 3 is the happy dumb one. Internally anyway.
What is it like to see four of yourself?
It’s still seeing four Kriegers. If there were four Ray Gillettes, however, that would be four Luckys, and that might just kill me from having too many erections at once.
A lot of these episodes are ending with major cliff hangers, for instance last weeks ended with Cyril coming to the rescue with a tank and this weeks with our friend from the FBI showing up at the rebel camp, is this a new theme?
I think Adam does as Adam will. I never question his genius. Will episodes be more serialized next season? Who knows? We may end up running a crab shack in the islands somewhere. (SPOILER: We will not be running a crab shack in the islands somewhere.)
Is there anything you can tell us about the last episode of season 5?
Yes, it is totally awesome and everyone will love it.
Looking back at Season 5, what is your favorite about the big change from ISIS to Drug Dealers to Arm Dealers to now I don’t even know what to call it?
The greatest thing about this big change is, it’s still the same show. Like I mentioned with the crab shack, this show is really about the dynamic of these characters. Put them in any situation (as long as there is danger involved) and it’s still Archer. The cast knew that when we read the first script this season. It doesn’t matter what our heroes’ jobs are, the relationship dynamics remain the same and the comedy keeps flowing. So suck it, haters!
As of last night, season 5 of Archer is a wrap, ending with episode 13 entitled, Arrival/Departure. I think it is safe to say that Lucky was completely right, in saying that the finale was totally awesome. For now, Adam Reed, Lucky Yates, and the rest of the cast at Archer have really changed things up. But a key element that stays the same is the dynamic of the characters. Whether you have them be at ISIS, become drug dealers, or maybe even work at a crab shack, the dynamic that makes them, them is still there. So, until season 6 of Archer premieres, we have to think about what has happened this season, rewatch the episodes, and of course wonder about what’s coming next. Thank you so much to Lucky Yates for taking time out of his busy schedule to conduct this interview! Stay tuned to NJTechReviews for more coverage on Archer!
