Around 9 days ago on April 25th 2014, Google allowed anyone in the USA to buy Glass, for the regular price of $1500. Up until then and still for the time being, Google Glass had only been available to Explorers and you needed an invite to purchase the exciting wearable. Earlier today, a few people noticed that if you go directly to the URL for the Glass Store you could still purchase Google Glass with an invite. We were surprised to see this and we reached out to Google for comment. A few minutes ago a Google Spokesperson provided NJTechReviews with the following comment.
“This link was created to accommodate potential Explorers who were still in the pipeline from last week’s sale. We’re shutting it down shortly. As always, we will continue to experiment with ways to expand the Explorer program in the weeks and months ahead.”
As we know now, the link was made to allow people looking to become Explorers who were still in the pipe line from April 15th’s sale to finish the purchase. With that being said, Google will be shutting down the Google Glass Store shortly. In fact you could only reach the Glass Store with the exact URL, if you went through it from the regular Google Glass site, it did tell you that you needed to be an Explorer. Google did say that they are going to continue experiment with ways to get more people in to the Explorer program during the weeks and months ahead. And as of this post, all of the colors in the Google Glass Store via the URL are sold out.
