Last year Samsung unveiled their new top of the line tablet series, the Galaxy Tab S and they have just announced the next generation variants. Landing in August, will be the Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 and Galaxy Tab S2 8.0. As Samsung put it, this is their most immersive tablet to date and are the new flagships. Like Samsung has done in the past, these tablets take some cues from the flagship smartphones. The Tab S2 pushes the products lines further with more portable design and sharper AMOLED displays.
Let’s start off with the Galaxy Tab S2 9.7, the bigger brother of the pair. It comes in at just 5.6 millimeters thick and weighs in at only 389 grams for the WiFi variant, the LTE variant comes in at 392 grams. Either way, the Tab S2 9.7 is remarkably thin and might just be the thinnest Android tablet on the market. The device has a metal frame as well, which makes it similar to the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge in terms of design. Samsung is giving the Tab S2 a great display, it features a 9.7-inch 2048 x 1536 QXGA Super AMOLED display with adaptive display technologies built-in. The smaller of the pair, the Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 features the same resolution and display type, but in a smaller 8.0-inch size. The Tab S2 8.0 features the same thin design as well, coming in at just 5.6 millimeters thick and even lighter at 265 grams for the WiFi variant, or 272 grams for the LTE variant.
Samsung is saying that the displays on both the 8.0 and 9.7 will deliver 94% of natural tones to show true-to-life colors and be great for reading on the tablet. Both tablets are being powered by a Quad 1.9GHz + Quad 1.3GHz, Octacore application processor along with 3GB of RAM. They are running Android 5.0 Lollipop with a Samsung user interface, by looking at the specifications on paper they should run pretty well.
On either the 8.0 or the 9.7 you will find an 8 megapixel lens on the back and a 2.1 megapixel lens on the front. They both feature Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, WiFi Direct, and Bluetooth 4.0 for connectivity. As well as several bands of LTE, which means we should see these tablets appear on some carriers. The Tab S2 9.7 features a 5,870mAh battery, while the Tab S2 8.0 has a 4,000mAh battery. You can get both tablets with either 32GB or 64GB of storage, but both tablets feature a micro SD card slot as well.
Samsung will be pre-loading both the Tab S2 9.7 and Tab S2 8.0 with Microsoft Office Solutions which gives you 100GB of OneDrive storage for two years with the purchase of the device.
Both the Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 and Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 will be landing next month, August 2015 in both WiFi and LTE variants. No word on pricing yet, but since the global rollout starts next month, August 2015, we should begin learning about pricing and exact availability in the coming weeks for the new Galaxy Tab S2 devices.
