The cat is out of the bag on Netflix quality, at least for streams on mobile devices. Earlier this week, T-Mobile announced that Netflix was now apart of Binge On, to celebrate their CEO John Legere put out a video which hinted at other carriers not having a high quality stream. This then caused some sharp words to be traded between carrier representatives with T-Mobile’s CEO. But, late last night Netflix informed the world that they are the ones who throttle the streams on AT&T and Verizon.
Netflix is the one who has been lowering the quality of the streams to around 360p for AT&T and Verizon. The goal here is to prevent customers from going over there data allotments. This is not something new, Netflix has been throttling streams globally for around 5 years, they limit it too around 600kbps. The streaming giant has also had similar issues with internet service providers, but this is the first time the company has publicly acknowledged the use of throttling on mobile devices.
So in the end, while this does come as a shocker, Netflix is doing this to theoretically save you money. But, coming in May Netflix should let you choose the quality of the stream, thus giving the power back to consumers.
NJTechReviews has reached out to both AT&T and Verizon for comments and will update when we hear back.
