Android 8.0 is now officially Oreo, and the statue is pretty epic–But the bigger story is not just the official name but the many new features. The big question is when can you get the latest and greatest from Google, while the final version is being seeded to the Android Developers it is not yet in the hand of consumers. It will be pushing out to the Pixel, Nexus 5X, and Nexus 6P devices very soon.
For third-party Android devices, aka those not made in-house by Google, the rollouts for those devices will be further down the line. Android 8.0 Oreo has some pretty cool features, with a big focus being put on battery life. The Android team has spent a lot of time working on battery life, and whats eats it up. Android Oreo will let you choose which applications are more important and lets the resources be put towards them. The operating system will automatically limit background activity of less used applications.
So while Google has brought battery life with Oreo, the overall experience of the software is smoother. In fact on the Pixel and Pixel XL, the bootup time is twice as fast, and you can expect this speed improvement on all devices getting the update. Google Play Protect will help to protect your device and will remove dangerous applications.
Autofill is now integrated across the entire software experience on the device, even with third-party applications if you allow it. It will even remember logins enabling you to quickly login to Twitter, Netflix, and other sites. Picture-in-Picture lets you video chat or watch content while using other applications. And similar to 3D Touch on iOS, Notification Dots can now be long pressed to see what they are and you can even clear them without opening the app.
Self-expression is important, and Google knows that, so there are new ways to express. Over 60 new emojis are arriving with Android 8.0 Oreo. Overall, Android 8.0 Oreo bring many welcomed enhancements and new features. It should be rolling out soon to “Pure Google” devices like the Pixel and the last generation Nexus devices.
