A new line of SanDisk brand microSDXC cards will be hitting store shelves this October that will feature Nintendo character art on the package as well as the Nintendo Switch logo on the card itself. These new cards are part of a global partnership between Nintendo and Western Digital Corporation and will serve as a way to supplement the internal memory of the Nintendo switch.
In a way these cards are reminiscent of the memory cards that would be used with the Nintendo Gamecube, in that they will provide additional memory for games. Likewise, the cards also act similarly to the expansion packs needed for certain Nintendo 64 games, since it has been confirmed that certain Nintendo Switch games will require a SanDisk card for additional storage. Unlike many other modern platforms, the Switch will allow players to save downloaded content, such as downloadable games, to their SanDisk cards and take it with them.
The cards themselves come in two storage sizes, 64 gigabytes and 128 gigabytes, and will be used exclusively by the Switch, meaning that they cannot be used as standard SD cards. A price has yet to be set for these products, but it’s safe to assume that the 128 GB model will cost more than the 64 GB model.
A definitive release date has not been set either but they are scheduled to start appearing some time this October.
