Statement: T-Mobile Prepares for Impact of Hurricane Sandy
Readying Network Along Entire Eastern Seaboard, Including Mid-Atlantic and Northeast
Bellevue, Wash. — Oct. 26, 2012
T-Mobile engineering teams are monitoring and continuing to prepare for Hurricane Sandy, establishing regional staging areas and network Command Centers throughout the Eastern Seaboard, and especially in the areas of potential landfall or severe impact, including the mid-Atlantic states of Virginia, Maryland and Delaware; New Jersey, New York and areas north including Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
T-Mobile has made significant investments throughout the year in supplemental cell site backup generators, microwave technology equipment and cell-on-wheels (COWs), along with other tools and equipment to enhance the stability and, when necessary, the recovery of our network operations.
T-Mobile is taking the following additional steps to prepare the company’s network for the potential impact of Hurricane Sandy:
- T-Mobile has access to additional fuel supplies for generators and company vehicles for the use in network recovery and other emergency circumstances.
- Backup generators and fuel tanks for regional network switch operations are being put in place and tested, and fuel is being topped off for all generators in the potential path of Hurricane Sandy.
- Equipment is being readied to be trucked into affected areas to facilitate back-haul or data communication from the cell sites to T-Mobile’s network switches in the event that fixed-line service fails.
- T-Mobile is staging COWs in neighboring markets to move in and provide additional wireless communications capacity in the hardest-hit areas.
- The company is monitoring evacuation efforts and routes, and taking steps to increase wireless capacity in these areas.
- T-Mobile will coordinate closely with the recovery efforts of local, state and federal agencies in the areas affected by the potential storm.
- For employees, T-Mobile has crisis plans in place for those in the path of a storm, and will respond quickly to help safeguard our employees and our facilities.
Tips for T-Mobile Customers
To better facilitate communication during and after Hurricane Sandy, and to alleviate anticipated network congestion, T-Mobile recommends its customers follow these important tips:
- Keep your phone batteries charged at all times. Have an alternative plan to recharge your battery in case of a power outage, such as charging your wireless device by using your car charger or having extra mobile phone batteries on hand.
- Consider purchasing a portable battery pack and have it charged ahead of time so that you will have a back-up source of power for your phone.
- Utilize text messaging to communicate instead of voice calls. Text messaging has a greater success rate in getting through the network during high-usage periods versus voice calls.
- Keep your voice calls short in duration.
- Now is a good time to begin familiarizing yourself with WiFi calling functionality, a unique feature that allows all T-Mobile customers to place calls via WiFi and can come in very handy in the event that the T-Mobile network experiences service delays or disruptions due to capacity issues, power issues, or high winds and severe weather. It’s almost here, your only six days away from the opportunity to owning your very own HTC ONE S. We got a chance to greet this new device at an exclusive event T-Mobile hosted in a chic location downtown NYC in the Meatpacking district. Carly Foulkes the leggy beautiful actress now spokeswoman for T-Mobile made a guest appearance. T-Mobile has given her an edgier look this year to convey the message that their 4G network is here and its worth giving it a try. Well there is a slew of devices running 4G on there network and on the 25th they will add a new member, the HTC ONE S.
First reaction about this phone is that it’s a very well designed device. The uni-body design gives it some really nice lines and curves. Upon picking it up the device is perfectly weighted, they seem to have achieve the perfect balance not too light or heavy. The Super AMOLED screen is very bright and Android 4.0 is super snappy on it. With it just running a dual care Snapdragon the fluidity was impressive. I really got to see it in action when we activated the camera into burst mode and it took 20 photos without any lag. Can’t say much about video or photo quality because the room was oddly light with red glowing lights. The phone is really slim at 7.95mm and feels really sturdy. Overall I like what I saw and can’t wait to give it a full test. Jump after the specs to see our hands on.

Our friends at Nokia have sent us the Lumia 710 for us to review! It is their first Windows Phone for the United State’s market. It runs on T-Mobile and comes in at a very low price with contract. Nokia is re-entering the US Market in a very strong way, they already have the Lumia 710 and more devices are on the on their way. Now, let’s get started with the full review of the Nokia Lumia 710!
Design
The Nokia Lumia 710 features a great design. Nokia has a great design team, and there work is found on Lumia 710. The device comes in either black or white. On the front of the device you have the front speaker, Nokia logo, T-Mobile logo, and the back, home, and search buttons. The buttons slightly raised off the surface of the front. On the left hand side you can find the volume rocker and camera button. On the top of the device you have the micro USB port, headphone jack, and the power/sleep button. On the back of the device you will find the 5 mega-pixel camera with LED flash, Nokia logo, speaker, microphone, and the Nokia 710 logo. If you take the back cover off you will find the battery and the T-Mobile SIM Card slot. Keep in mind that Lumia 710 has no micro SD card slot. I don’t see this being much of an issue, as the phone is geared for first-time smartphone users. On the bottom of the phone toward the left hand side you will find 2(two) holes, this were you can put a lanyard/charm through the device. This way you can personalize or pull it out of your bag quickly. When holding the phone is fits very nice into your hand and is very comfortable to hold. The design of the Nokia Lumia 710 is very nice.
Hardware
Now, we move onto the specs on Lumia 710. It has a 3.7-inch ClearBlack LCD display with a resolution of 800 x 480. The quality of the screen is pretty good, in terms of viewing angles most of them are good. Although it does get washed-out if you look at it from a very bad angle. You get 8GB of internal space and that is what you are limited too. There is no micro SD card slot on this device. The Lumia 710 is a pretty snappy device, it has a 1.4GHz Snapdragon Processor with 512MB of RAM. This keep’s the device running pretty quickly, and then of course you have 4G speeds from T-Mobile. In terms of speeds on this device, they were pretty well-rounded. For download our average was 2.5Mbps and our upload average was 1Mbps. We have around 3-4 bars of coverage from T-Mobile in our area. Keep in mind that Data speeds vary depending on how good T-Mobile’s service is in your area. Call quality was superb on the Lumia 710, we could hear them loud and clear and the other end could hear us just as well. On the back of the device you have a 5 mega-pixel camera with LED flash that records 720pHD video. On the front you have a VGA camera. While still images could be better, video quality is great. If you are the kind of person who uses the camera a lot, it is not the best option for you. As quality could be better, but for the first-time smartphone user I don’t see why you couldn’t go for this device. Nokia has done a great job with the Hardware on the Lumia 710.
Operating System
The Nokia Lumia 710 is running on Windows Phone Mango(7.5). Windows Phone Mango is the same experience, for the most part, on every single Windows Phone device. While the applications may differ, the design and flow of the operating system does not. The Lumia 710 and Windows Phone Mango are a perfect match, the OS runs perfectly on this device. There is almost no lag time and it is seamlessly integrated in with the device. Nokia and T-Mobile have put great apps on this device, and I would not consider them bloatware what so ever. All of the pre-loaded applications come in very handy. For starters if your into sports, you will love the exclusive ESPN app that comes on the Lumia 710. You can get live scores from the games and much more. You also get Nokia Drive, but the downside is you have to download a lot of stuff for it work fully. But one you get past the downloading you will end up loving this great Navigation tool. Overall, Nokia did a great job with the operating system on the Lumia 710.
Bottom Line
The Nokia Lumia 710 for T-Mobile is a good smartphone. It is meant for people making the switch to smart device, and it is perfect for that. However, if you want a Windows Phone device do not hesitate to get the Lumia 710. It will work good for the most part. If you love having a great camera on the back of your phone, you can find better devices on T-Mobile. Ah but, if your okay with not having the bets camera out there, then I see no reason why you shouldn’t at least consider the Nokia Lumia 710. T-Mobile’s Online Store is offering a great deal, the Nokia Lumia 710 is free with a 2-year contract through March 1 2012! After March 1 this deal will no longer be offered, so be sure to go to their site and get it while you can for this great price! Usually the Nokia Lumia 710 will cost you $49.99 with a 2-year contract or $349.99 with no contract. You Can Get Your Nokia Lumia 710 From T-Mobile, By Clicking Here. We would like to thank Nokia for providing us with a copy of the “Nokia Lumia 710 For T-Mobile”.

AT&T has just announced that it has withdrawn it’s bid to buy out T-Moible. They have made this decision after a very thorough review of their options. They began there biding in March of this year. Randall Stephenson, AT&T chairman and CEO, had to say this about the announcement:
“AT&T will continue to be aggressive in leading the mobile Internet revolution, Over the past four years we have invested more in our networks than any other U.S. company. As a result, today we deliver best-in-class mobile broadband speeds – connecting smartphones, tablets and emerging devices at a record pace – and we are well under way with our nationwide 4G LTE deployment”.
If they had bought out T-Mobile they would have gotten more spectrum, which they very much so need. However, AT&T will counties to look for more spectrum. They also are asking the regulators for 2 man things. The first is to allow the free markets to work so that additional spectrum is available to meet the immediate needs of the U.S. wireless industry. The second would be to enact legislation to meet our nation’s longer-term spectrum needs. We will have to see what the regulators and policy makers say, hopefully they will find more spectrum from somewhere. For more info see the press release below.

AT&T Ends Bid To Add Network Capacity
Through T-Mobile USA Purchase
Company Reaffirms Its Commitment to Mobile Broadband Leadership
Dallas, Texas, December 19, 2011
AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) said today that after a thorough review of options it has agreed with Deutsche Telekom AG to end its bid to acquire T-Mobile USA, which began in March of this year.
The actions by the Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Justice to block this transaction do not change the realities of the U.S. wireless industry. It is one of the most fiercely competitive industries in the world, with a mounting need for more spectrum that has not diminished and must be addressed immediately. The AT&T and T-Mobile USA combination would have offered an interim solution to this spectrum shortage. In the absence of such steps, customers will be harmed and needed investment will be stifled.
“AT&T will continue to be aggressive in leading the mobile Internet revolution,” said Randall Stephenson, AT&T chairman and CEO. “Over the past four years we have invested more in our networks than any other U.S. company. As a result, today we deliver best-in-class mobile broadband speeds – connecting smartphones, tablets and emerging devices at a record pace – and we are well under way with our nationwide 4G LTE deployment.
“To meet the needs of our customers, we will continue to invest,” Stephenson said. “However, adding capacity to meet these needs will require policymakers to do two things. First, in the near term, they should allow the free markets to work so that additional spectrum is available to meet the immediate needs of the U.S. wireless industry, including expeditiously approving our acquisition of unused Qualcomm spectrum currently pending before the FCC. Second, policymakers should enact legislation to meet our nation’s longer-term spectrum needs.
“The mobile Internet is a dynamic industry that can be a critical driver in restoring American economic growth and job creation, but only if companies are allowed to react quickly to customer needs and market forces,” Stephenson said.
To reflect the break-up considerations due Deutsche Telekom, AT&T will recognize a pretax accounting charge of $4 billion in the 4th quarter of 2011. Additionally, AT&T will enter a mutually beneficial roaming agreement with Deutsche Telekom.
