Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 Review

Our friends over at Lenovo have sent us the IdeaPad Y580 for us to review. And when I first saw the device, the first thing you think is that it is massive. And it is a monster of a computer both on the inside and on the outside. It has a 15 inch display, NVIDIA GeForce Graphics, Intel Core i7 Processor, and much more! This laptop is meant for gaming and entertainment! But, should it be your next laptop? We will answer that in the full review which begins now!

Design, Keyboard, And Trackpad

The IdeaPad Y580 is a massive computer, and in some ways it’s hardware is better than the design. Although I do have  to say that I like the dark brushed aluminum color, that is a mix between black and grey. The laptop is thick at 1.5-inches, and it is heavy at 6.17 pounds. You are better off holding the laptop with 2(two) hands rather than one! Now, let’s go over the design of the Y580. On the top case you have the classic silver Lenovo logo, that is raised over the brushed black/grey aluminum color. The bottom case, is just black. It has several vents, which is important because as you may have guessed it does get hot at times. Of course you also have a sticker that gives you the information on the operating system, as well as many serial numbers next too it. You have 4 rubber black foots, and of course you have a removable 6-Cell battery, that gets around 5-hours of battery life. It is nice that the battery is removable, as you can carry a spare for the long trips. Just be sure to lock the battery in after putting it in. On the left hand side you have a VGA port, ethernet port, HDMI port, 2 USB 3.0 ports, and a vent. On the right hand side you have a headphone jack, charging port, microphone port, and 2 more USB ports. On the front right hand corner you have a SD card reader and in the middle you have several LED notification lights. When you open the laptop, you will see your 15.6-inch screen, keyboard, trackpad, and some other buttons. You do get Lenovo’s famous AccuType Keyboard, and this specific model also includes a full numeric keypad. However, they still managed to give it a very clean layout and to make typing easier and more accurate the keys are spaced out properly and are curved. The number pad is just an added bonus for this powerhouse of a computer. For those of you who like to game at night or use the computer at night, fear not as you have a backlight keyboard. Lenovo also included their intelligent keyboard  on this device. It has some nice gestures including scrolling, zooming in or out, and of course rotating. One thing that is really nice is the palm rejection feature, this way you don’t move what you are looking at by accident. Overall, Lenovo has done a great job with the IdeaPad Y580!

Display, Entertainment, Software

On the IdeaPad Y580 you get a 15.6-inch display with a resolution of 1920 X 1080! It is powered by an Nvidia GeForce GTX660m and Intel HD 4000 graphics card. As was said before the IdeaPad Y580 is built for multimedia and entertainment. Lenovo also included OneKey Theater II which can let you or the computer automatically set up the screen for how it would look best for what you are doing. You can access OneKey Theater by simply tapping the small button above the keyboard with the video camera on it. With that being said, the quality of the screen is very good and viewing angles are great. Streaming a movie from Netflix looks amazing, as do watching an HD video online. In terms of other entertainment features you get Blu-Ray capable drive, this way you can watch you Blu-Ray films on the go. You have 2 JBL speakers and Dolby Home Theater V4, both of these features combined together give you very loud and good quality sound. And then of course you can custom configure the sound in the Dolby Home Theater V4 application that is pre-loaded on the device. You are set to do what ever it is you want thanks to the Intel Core i7-3610QM Processor with 8GB of RAM. This powers the IdeaPad Y580 and makes it run super fast. RapidBoot Technology is also included making turning on and off your computer work much faster. From browsing the web to streaming a movie, or to gaming the IdeaPad Y580 can handle a lot at once and it handles it well. Out of the box you are running Windows 7 Home Premium 64BIT. In terms of pre-loaded applications you get Adobe Reader, Google Chrome, Lenovo YouCam, CyberLink Power 2Go, OneKey Theater, Dolby Home Theater V4, and more.

Bottom Line

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 is a great laptop. While it does have some flaws with design and not that large of a battery life, it is a very powerful machine. It is definitely meant for gamers or entertainment lovers, and for other customers I would recommend looking at other products. It runs super fast thanks to it’s Intel Core i7 processor and has a beautiful 15.6 inch display. It has applications that make entertainment even better and more customizable. You get the AccuType keyboard and an intelligent touchpad. All of these features and more, make this a great choice for a gamer on a budget or someone looking for a power house machine. The Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 is available for your purchase and starts at $839.99 . For More Information On The Lenovo IdeaPad Y580, Please Click Here. We would like to thank Lenovo for providing us with a copy of the “Lenovo IdeaPad Y580”.
