Verizon took the stage at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show to announced the winners of the Powerful Answers Award campaign. In fact it was first announced at the 2013 CES and then they had a follow-up event in NYC, a few weeks later. It is a unique opportunity for startups and people with ideas to innovate and anyone can try. That was a big theme, if you have an idea that could work and help create change, you should certainly apply. Yes, there will be a Powerful Answers Awards 2.0 and they will make it even better than the first one. Lowell McAdam the CEO and Chairman of Verizon was join onstage by Mo Rocca to present the event. They were joined by three representatives from the top winning companies.

The winner in the Education category was TinyTap and they won the grand prize of $1 Million. They are a startup based out of Israel and it is focused on creating education content. This content can be user-generated and is available for many different age levels. TinyTap created the world’s first user-generated content application store. Teachers, educators, and many others have already begun creating content for this unique application.

In the healthcare category, the winner of $1 Million was Smart Vision Labs and this was a very cool idea. Essentiality it is a device that plugs into you smartphone and can scan your eye and give you a prescription. Many developing countries have very bad contains when it comes to eye care and Smart Vision Labs wants to change this. By scanning someone eyes, they can then get their prescription, and give them a pair of glasses. They are based out of New York City and plan on working first in Rwanda with this new technology.

Lastly in the sustainability category, Mosaic took home the $1 Million grand prize. This application will let you take part in the switch over to clean power, like solar panels. They are creating an online platform, like a smartphone or web-based application, that can let people invest in solar projects. For instance in NJ, Fort Dix is a project on here, as they are looking to add many solar panels. You can invest in a project like this and many others, by doing this you are helping to make a difference and help speed up the switch to cleaner energy sources.

Verizon Powerful Answers Awards is a very unique project and campaign, especially for a telecommunications company. As they are usually breaking news by announcing new devices or expanding networks, this time they are truly helping to inspire and innovate. While there were around 1,000 entries for the VZPAA 1.0, many more are expected for the 2.0. It is great to see that Verizon wants to see innovation and able to make these investments in people’s ideas. There were 15 winners in total, but these were the top three entires.
