Verizon has been field testing 5G and is working quickly toward its commercialization

Verizon logo(2015)

Verizon was the first carrier to launch 4G nationwide in the United States, so it make’s sense that they would be the leading the drive to get to 5G. And we can now confirm as Verizon has announced that they have been field testing 5G and are working quickly toward its commercialization. While the fact that they are testing 5G is not a new one, they have released some information on their tests and it proves that they are in first place moving forward.

Through Verizon’s 5G Technology Forum, the carrier is bringing many partners together. These partners include Ericsson, Intel, Nokia, Samsung electronics America, and Qualcomm. And these are just core partners who are working on technical alignment, making sure that any industry standard will eventually be chosen. Also, making sure that the technology in our future smartphones and devices will have the right bands to support 5G. From the telecommunications and technology company standpoint, Apple, Cisco, Ericsson, Intel, LG, Nokia, Samsung, and Qualcomm are all on-board. Verizon is working hard and making sure that the industry leaders come together to drive the standards for 5G technology. Along with these companies, their are several venture capital groups from the East and West coast on board in this forum as well.

Verizon is not just all talk, they have been field testing 5G technology in a wide range of scenarios. And these are not just speed tests in a perfect room, these scenarios mimic real life experiences. They do this by using millimeter wave bands, including bands that were specified in the FCC’s Notice for Proposed Rulemaking for the 5G Spectrum. 5G is being tested through fixed wireless and mobile systems that are connected to the Verizon network, from there the resulted are measured quite precisely.

Along with the overall testing, Verizon is also making innovation with Antennas, specifically with millimeter and centimeter wave spectrum. As well as with beam forming, beam tracking, wideband spectrum, and with deployment flexibility for these antennas. Verizon is really pushing hard to make sure 5G is just as reliable as 4G LTE is and to make sure that the technology behind can hold up to the demand.

5G is the future of connectivity, not just in the United States, but Globally. You can expected it to provide multiple gigabits per second speeds and single millisecond latency, essentially bring Fiber Optic speeds to wireless. It will also open many new doors for powering the Internet of Things in our near future.

Verizon is pushing hard to make 5G a reality and it is coming sooner than you think, they plan to start testing much more in the coming months. Keep checking NJTechReviews for the latest news on the race to 5G, and chances are Verizon will be the one to offer 5G nationwide first.
