SquareTrade puts the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge to the test

SquareTrade puts the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge to the test-NJTechReviews

SquareTrade is back with another study, or rather results from its most recent Breakability tests. This time SquareTrade put the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge through there Breakability test and they did better than earlier models. Samsung is touting the new IP68 certification that both the S7 and S7 Edge feature, thus making this test quite interesting. For this year, SquareTrade is using a new Deep Water DunkBot and TumbleBot to test the devices.

The Deep Water DunkBot places the phone five feet under water for 30 minutes, while the TumbleBot continually drops the phones in an enclosed case at a rotational speed of 50 revolutions per minute for 30 seconds. Both of these tests really push the latest and greatest devices to the limits, and even better they mimic real world situations.

Specifically for this set of tests, the S7 and S7 Edge were put up against the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. Put it simply, SquareTrade is saying that while these new devices are water-resistant, they are not sidewalk resistant. The S7 and S7 Edge made it through the 30 minutes under five feet of water and while the screens still worked, the audio was permanently damaged. Keep in mind that iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are not water resistance at all, but they have a reinforced display.

In the TumbleBot the S7 and S7 Edge did not fare so well. The front screens on both devices ended up with some cracks, while the back glass on these devices got heavily damaged. The iPhone 6s made it out with no scratches at all, while the 6s Plus had a cracked display. Similarly with a drop test on a sidewalk, the S7 made it through four falls, while the S7 Edge was done after seven.

Lastly, for the bend test the pair of S7 devices had similar results to that of the S6 devices. Keep in mind that Samsung did not completely change-up the design this year, it was mostly a refinement upgrade. The S7 Edge cracked at 110 pounds of pressure and was destroyed at less than 170 pounds. Both the iPhone 6s and Galaxy S7 were able to handle 170 pounds of pressure.

Overall, the Galaxy S7 came in with a Breakability score of 5 and the S7 Edge got a 7 on the Breakability scale. Both of these devices came in at the medium risk category, a simple fix to make your device more protective would be to get a case or even a screen protector. You can see all of these tests in action on the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge in SquareTrade’s video below!
