After the massively successful Xenoverse games, Dragon Ball Z is finally back to being a 2.5D fighting game. The trailer for the game only lasted around two minutes, but what was shown was an action packed experience full of the most iconic Dragon Ball characters fighting in some of the most recognizable locations.
By using cell-shaded 3D models, the game is able to accurately replicate the popular anime the game is based on. Despite using 3D models, the gameplay takes place on a 2D plane, much like the Street Fighter games and the earlier Dragon Ball Z Budokai games.
The trailer also makes a point of the game’s 3 vs 3 battle mode, a mode which presumably allows the player to select 3 characters to fight against a team an opponent’s team of 3 characters. This is similar to the 3 vs 3 action of the Marvel vs Capcom series, and possibly acts the same way with the player being able to switch between the 3 characters on their team and also use them to preform super special moves.
Among the characters shown are Goku, Frieza, Gohan, Vegeta, Cell, and Buu, but more characters are likely to included, perhaps even some from the recent series Dragon Ball Super. It remains unknown as of now if this game will have a story mode like previous Dragon Ball games, but it is staled for early 2018.
