Stop SOPA And PIPA

Dear Readers,

As many of you know Congress will be voting on January 24 for an extremely controversial bill. These are the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA). These 2(two) bills will impose new laws, that would be very harmful to the internet. They are very similar to those that are currently being used in China. Millions of websites such as LinkedIn, AOL, Facebook, Twitter, and many more are opposing it. Many people and entrepreneurs have also been opposing. They have all sent letters to Congress, so that they can be heard. These bills are meant to stop piracy, but most likely they will not stop it. Instead they will get rid of many of the freedoms we currently have on the internet. For starters they would be blocking websites and search engines.  Google or Bing would be forced to delete entire websites for the search results log. They would also stop innovation and job creation. This is due to the fact that they would force websites to monitor what is on the web, giving them the power to delete or remove what the laws deem unacceptable. This would also result in a lawsuit or some type of action being taken against the person who was doing this. This would remove many freedoms that we currently have. The biggest issue is that it would stop or end piracy, in some ways it amazes me that Congress has not yet realized this. The piracy websites would shut down for only a little while and then start up via different domain. Instead of stopping piracy, they will be hurting people who use the web legitimately and website owners like our selves. There are many more ways to get rid of piracy, that Congress is over looking. The sooner that Congress realizes this, the better this way we can still have our freedoms on the internet. While SOPA is a good idea, they are doing it in the wrong way. They are trying to stop rogue websites and piracy. The issue is that many of the sites are not located in the United States. They should also be stopping it using a different method, this way it doesn’t hurt our internet freedoms. More and more people are opposing Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA) everyday. Yet Congress is still trying to figure out the bill and whether it is good or not. This is where you come in, if you oppose the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA) then let you local Congressional Representatives know. The Bill is currently in the House and they will be voting on January 24! This date is very fast approaching. Google has set up a petition that you can sign online. You Can Access Google’s Petition, By Clicking Here. If you agree that SOPA and PIPA are bad, then please sign the petition. As you may have noticed many sites like Wikipedia, Reddit, and Google have gone black today in an effort to stop SOPA and PIPA. Please help us in the fight against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA).

Sincerely,

Jacob Krol
