LoJack For Laptops Review (Absolute Software)
Our friends over at Absolute Software have sent us LoJack For Laptops for us to review. First we gave you information on computer thefts over the year and then we gave you our interview with Ward Clapham the VP of Recovery Services over at Absolute. And now we have our review of LoJack For Laptops for you. We went over the setup, features, and more. Our full review of LoJack For Laptops begins now.
Setup
Installation and Setup up for LoJack for Laptops is as simple as inserting the disc or hitting download. In some cases it may have been pre-installed on your computer, as they partner with many companies like Lenovo. You simply install the device and give it the permissions its requests. This makes sure that it can properly locate your device, lock it, delete your data and be able to recover it. You will make an account with Absolute/LoJack for Laptops, which requires you to give them your name, email, phone number, and address. This will all help in case your device is stolen and to recover your account. However, you can hold on to your address if you would like too. There is no application that get’s installed on your computer, it is all based off of the web. And everything that you need is there. Overall, Absolute did a great job in making sure that the setup and install is easy. As the product is meant to be there in case it happens, and hopefully you wont have to use the recover service. But it does a great job of providing assurance just in case your device is stolen. They have you make a 4-digit PIN that is your second level of security when accessing the account, deleting the info, and recovering the device. Absolute takes your security very safely and they understand how important of a device your computer or laptop may be.
User Interface
Just as the installation and setup is simple, the user interface is made to be simple. At the top it will say “Welcome to the Customer Center (Insert Your Name Here)”, and this your greeting. This is like mission control for the security of your devices. You can access all of your devices, settings, FAQ’s and support from this page. You can also report a theft very easily from this page, of course you should report it to your local authorities first. You also see all of the information regarding your commuter and your subscription with LoJack for Laptops. It will give you your registration code, serial number, make and model of the device, expiration date, subscription type, device status, and license status. You also have the option to print this information out, delete this device from your account, or enable/disable the locating feature. LoJack does require you to read a large agreement before turning on the locating, they don’t want you tracking other people by installing it on their computer. They want to make sure you use it with in what the law terms to be legal uses. Overall, the user interface is just another great part of LoJack for Laptops.
Features: Locate, Lock, Delete, Recover
Locate, Lock, Delete, Recover; They are the 4(four) main features of LoJack for Laptops, depending on which subscription you get. The difference between standard and premium, is that premium will guarantee your laptop. Meaning that if your laptop is stolen, and they cannot recover you will get up to $1000 for the loss of the device(terms and conditions may apply). First off Locate let’s you see where your laptop is according to its IP address. So it may not be right on target and it updates automatically there is no refresh. One feature I wish the map had was the ability to zoom in on the location, hopefully they will add this in a future update. One neat feature is that it will you show your recent were about as well as your current location. It will also tell you the last time it was located. Lock is basically what it sounds like, with some added capabilities. This is perfect if your device is missing, you can lock out the computer and display a message. And before locking the computer you have to enter your PIN, one thing to note is that before recovering the device or starting to recover it you will have to unlock it. LoJack for Laptops does not offer you anyway to back up your information. Some of their competitors do offer some cloud backup, but this not available currently with this service. It would be nice to see this feature added in the future. Delete lets you delete everything but the operating system, thus removing all of your data which can be very helpful if your computer is stolen. It would be nice if you could remove certain files off of the device. Recovery is where you report the theft, and when submitting the report you can no longer access or make changes to locate, lock, or delete. Of course before reporting the theft itself you should and need to report it to your local authorities.
Bottom Line
LoJack for Laptops by Absolute Software is definitely a great piece of software. I would suggest that anyone who has a laptop who travels should at least look into getting or trying out LoJack for Laptops. For the minimum price of only $19.99 a year, it is worth the price. The premium edition will cost you a little more at $39.99 for a year. Keep in mind that LoJack for Laptops may be pre-installed on your computer, just check with your manufacture. One advantage that LoJack for Laptops has is that many of their employees are ex-police officers or some type of security work. So, it is up to you to make the final decision, but I would highly suggest checking out LoJack for Laptops from Absolute Software.
