ARCHER: Episode 8, Season 5 “Archer Vice: Rules of Extraction” (airing Monday, March 17, 10:00 pm e/p). Archer, Ray and Cyril raft down a crocodile-filled river while Lana and Pam plan a spa day for Malory. Written by Adam Reed. Pictured: Cyril Figgis (voice of Chris Parnell). FX Network

Last week we were left with a classic cliffhanger, Archer getting Cyril and Ray arrested after smuggling cocaine. This week we pick up right were we last off and learn much more. Keep reading to see our thoughts on this weeks episode.

With that being said, Spoiler’s do lie below. If you don’t want to spoil it, I suggest you come back after you have watched the episode The Rules of Extraction.

Now, the title gives a major hint as to what might happen during this weeks episode of Archer. Major hint, as last week we learned that Archer got himself along with Cyril and Ray arrested for smuggling cocaine in Colombia. As we see the first scene, they are still in the back of the vehicle with two guards who appear to be heavy drinkers. On the other hand Archer apparently doesn’t seem to know the difference between a gang and fraternity, either way it equals out to pure comedy. And that is something this episode is full of and then Cyril point out the cow in the road.

It seems that every time Archer talks, it seems that the situation grows worse. As the entire gang is sent falling off the road, keep in mind they are hand cuffed as well. Archer then tries to un-cuff them, but Ray then catches the key and is able to unlock them.

Cherlene evidently wants to be able to kill someone or at least have a clause for it, in her record contract. We then learn Archer has some technology skills for his voicemail. Malory has apparently hit a breaking point, something we haven’t yet truly seen from her character. She is honestly and whole heartedly worried about Archer, which shows off a different side. This leads to her being more easily annoyed and angered then usual. Belive it or not Cherlene and Pam don’t really help with the situation, but Lana tries to come to the rescue.

We then venture back to the jungle to learn that Ray is once again paralyzed or at least it appears so. Cyril gets the gun and defends Ray or at least tries to, then decides it’s a good time to try to be serious. Both Ray and Archer get a good laugh about this. Then they are left with how to get out of the situation, it appears to be on a raft through a crocodile filled river.

Lana decides that they have to do something nice for Malory or as Pam put it, its weird to see her cry. The answer to cheer Malory up, is a spa day or at least something near it. Not what Pam thought it was going to be, this is known for sure. Lana brings Malory to the spa room and Pam and Cherlene decide to have some fun with it. Which allows us to learn a little more about Archer and provides some more comedy for a laughter filled episode.

Did you know crocodile’s can’t chomp through fire? Archer didn’t know for sure, but it does sound correct. He appears to be scared of crocodiles, then Ray decides to belt out a few song lines. Then the crocodiles come up and eat the two dead guards. Which is a gross thing to think about, but the graphic sequence is quite intense. Ray decides to through some blame around, Archer then informs them Malory got the cocaine. Flash back to the spa day, Malory tells Lana, Pam, and Cherlene that Archer got the cocaine.

Ray is full of anger and throwing blame, really showing an arch in his character, at least for this episode. Did you also know that gasoline is crocodile repellant? Well Archer does and it is their way to get out of a bad situation, but he only does it after an apology from Ray. Thus they then swim for it and make it safely assure. However, they must’ve swallowed and taken in a boat load of gasoline. While they got out of the river, they are still in the jungle.

Archer feels that everything is going to be easy and that the doesn’t taken anything seriously, or at least this is what Ray is preaching. We then learn Cyril doesn’t know what Doctors Without Borders is, like at all. Archer then decides to steal a plan full of cocaine, so a hostage situation is taken, but the other people around the plan end it quickly. End it by killing the hostage, but the man of the hour Cyril comes in with suppressing fire to save the day or at least for a second it is saved. But who will fly the plane?

Ray finally gets what he is looking for and that is for Archer to admit or at least acknowledge that he screws around during danger to screw withe everyone. We then learn Ray could walk the entire time and that Archer wants phrasing back in season. The episode ends with some great music by Cherlene, as the planes flies off into the night sky. Truly an episode filled with character movement, plot movement, and a ton of laughs. What more could you ask for? Maybe another episode sooner than a week away, tune in next week for Episode 9!
