Earlier this summer AT&T finalized it’s purchase of DIRECTV, and now they are officially subsidiary they have been making several key announcements. You might have also seen the new commercial that announces DIRECTV is a part of the AT&T family, it is actually done pretty well. Today DIRECTV announced the first 4K ultra high-definition set-top box, the 4K Genie Mini!
No other service provider, as of now, offers a set-top box that will output full 4K content. The 4K Genie Mini comes in at the size of a paperback book and will output 4K content to any TV that can handle it. It of course utilizes HDMI 2.0 and will also push out Dolby Digital Plus audio, but the key to this box is that you no longer need to pair it with a DIRECTV Ready 4K television. As of now, you are most likely future proofing yourself if you have a 4K television and now you can pair it with a 4K set-top box.
Currently DIRECTV offers new releases, popular films, nature documentaries, and some other programming in full 4K ultra high-definition quality, but this can change every week. The service provider first launched 4K content with Genie HD DVR, and this allowed customers to have receiver-less connections on select DIRECTV 4K Ready televisions. These TV’s were made by Samsung and had access to DIRECTV 4K VOD movies, but in the future we will see more of these televisions from manufactures like Sony and LG.
The new 4K Genie Mini from DIRECTV is available today and has a base price of $99, but depending on what plan you have and where you have service with the provider, the price may differ. Hopefully it will be a little lower, not the other option which would more expensive.
