Netgear NeoTV Review

Netgear Announces The NeoTV - NJTechReviews

Our friends over at Netgear have sent us the NeoTV for us to review! It is their streaming device or box, it turns your TV into a smart TV. It was announced in September of 2011. It was originally priced at $79.99 and then it was moved down to the low price of $49.99 . Now, let’s get started with the full review of NeoTV.

Design

The NeoTV itself is a very simple box, that will not take up too much space. It comes in at 4 x 4 x 1, so it can fit in the palm of your hand. It is also very light. It comes in one color which is black. It is mostly a plastic build, which does not make it so durable. But hopefully you won’t be dropping it or causing to much damage to it. Since it’s size is so small it makes it super portable, meaning that you can take it with you where ever you are going. All you need is the unit, a small charger cable, and the small remote. If you have the remote app on your smartphone, you don’t even need the remote. All of this and more makes the NeoTV very portable. The remote that comes with the unit is also very small and has a very simple device. The remote has a home, power, return, menu, rewind, fast forward, play, pause, stop, previous, next and the 4 dial controls. The control has a nice feel to it, it is very comfortable to hold in your hand. Overall, the design of the Netgear NeoTV is very nice.

Operating System And Compatibility

The NeoTV is only a streaming player, you can not store files on it. It has a wide variety of apps and channels on it. It is a very simple interface and it works very well. The remote control has no lag when using it, quite simply it will open or go to the app that you decide on. It features both Netflix and Hulu Plus, they both offer streaming of popular movies and TV shows. You also have Vudu with at times gets new releases before Netflix or Hulu Plus. I also saw a HBO, Pandora, Picasso, Fling, and more! You also have some access to social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. There are also some games available, but they are hard to play. This is partially due to the remote, but hopefully this will be fixed in a future updated. Overall, the operating system is very simple and offers you many different possibilities. The main issue with the device is that it only works with an HDMI port, this knocks older TV’s out of the picture. It also has no USB ports, meaning that if you have photos or a video on a USB drive and want to show it up on your TV. You cannot due this with the NeoTV. Besides those few issues, the NeoTV is an all around good device.

Bottom Line

The Netgear NeoTV is a very simple and affordable streaming player. It comes in at only $50 and offers you many different ways of streaming content. From providers like Netflix, YouTube, Picassa, TMZ, HBO, Pandora, and many more. If you are looking for a simple streaming player and don’t want to spend that much money. The Netgear NeoTV maybe for you, it is supper portable as well. Making it easy to take along with you. While, there are plenty of competitors on the market like the Roku or if you TV is already a Smart TV. Netgear is letting you have smart applications for a pretty low price when you think about it. You Can Get Your Netgear NeoTV, By Clicking Here. We would like to thank Netgear for providing us with a copy of the “Netgear NeoTV”.
