T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus Review

Welcome to the Galaxy Tab 7 Plus, a little tablet offered over at T-Mobile for $249.99, that’s with an instant rebate of $150 and a mail in rebate card of $100. Do remember you do have to sign up for the two–year contract to lock in the $249.99 price tag. The current plans are 2GB-$39.99, 5GB-$49.99 or the 10GB-$79.99. You are getting T-Mobile 4G speeds for these price points. The design language of Samsung’s devices really show with the build on their tablets vs their phones. The phones feel really plastic and flimsy and on the other hand the tablets are rigid, strong and high-end feeling. I have the urge to throw both Samsung’s phone and tablet on the ground to see there reasoning behind this. I just don’t have the budget to ruin functioning productive devices. If any of you readers have non-working devices from Samsung we will be glad to record and document this little experiment.

 SPECS

The first thing that comes to my mind when dealing with a tablet is it’s size and at 193.7×122.4×9.9mm this tablet is on the smaller side. This does offer you greater versatility because it should fit a lot more places. At this size Samsung equipped it with a LCD capacitive touchscreen with 600×1024 pixels of resolution. The chipset is a Exymos 4210 dual-core 1.2 GHz processor, which is crunching on Android (3.2 Honeycomb). There choice for a camera was a 3.15 MP camera that kicks out 2048×1536 pixels files assisting it is a flash and a front facing 2 MP camera. On video setting your able to put out 30fps @ 720p. Storage for the T-Mobile version is 16 GB with an available micro sd slot expanding it another 32 GB. A surprise to me was that this one was packing a infrared port to use in conjunction with (Peel) smart remote app. It’s always so amazing to see what they can fit inside these devices, “things” we have come to expect like: Bluetooth, GPS, sensors: accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass. This unit has them all packaging it a  7.I inch frame and lets not forget to power it up all is a Li-Ion 4000 mAh battery.

THUMBS UP

This device from Samsung is quite capable in it’s small form factor. It offers you all the features of a larger device with a smaller package. The Tab 7 is really portable and easy on the hands while using it for your daily task. Samsung UI took a little getting used to but when you figure your way it becomes quite easy to navigate around Honeycomb. Though I think they could of made the UI a little simpler. The screen is really nice and bright videos websites and other content are clear and crisp. The device is really solid and performs well…”what else to you expect from Samsung”. 4G speeds from T-Mobile is relatively fast and had few drop zones but it performs really well in a static location. This form factor is really more for consumption of  digital life than content creating. Though I am sure you can find ways of being productive with this device it feels more like a leisure device. My highlight was the infrared port and configuring it was really simple and quick. The Peel app remote interface is really well designed and intuitive.I had my reservation for a tablet this size and to tell you this little thing kind of grew on me. There are a few drawbacks to having a unit this size, but what you loose in screen real estate you gain in portability. I found it most flexible while wearing clothes with pockets that could accommodate it, example our so loved cargo shorts..it just slip right in and no one would know that your carrying a tablet on your person.

THUMBS DOWN

Though this device goes to work it lacks a good camera for the price point I find that there could have been a better one. Another downfall was on the orientation of the power button, it’s located on the upper right above the volume rocker on portrait mode. Whenever I had it on landscape mode I had to keep in mind where the power button was or  I found myself turning off the device while doing regular task. The best way to hold it on landscape is to have the audio aux plug facing the left had so the power button would be facing upwards. This will help you avoid any contact while consumed in a game or browsing some engaging content.

BUY

This device is a buy for anyone that is looking for a capable tablet with all the features within a small package. It’s really easy to carry and doesn’t take much space and you have all the features of the larger ones. It’s a good quality build and works well for consuming digital entertainment.
