Sling TV is no longer the only player in the TV streaming game, especially in the spectrum of not being “tied’ in the normal sense to a service provider. AT&T and DIRECTV has just announced that they are building a TV streaming service. This new service will work from virtually any wired or wireless connected device, no matter the provider of the service. AT&T is prepping three plans, that they are saying will be premium and affordable.
DIRECTV Now, DIRECTV Mobile, and DIRECTV Preview are three models for this service. Similar to Sling TV, each model will not require a set top box, a satellite dish, or most importantly an annual contract. Differently, AT&T and DIRECTV will allow a set number of simultaneous sessions, and this is a big deal. As one of the most common complaints with Sling TV, is that multiple people can not watch at the same time.
The Now plan appears to be your most all around run of the mill offering. It will be similar to what DIRECTV currently offers including on-demand and live programming from many networks, plus premium add-on options. The process for signing up is as simple as downloading an app, signing up, and begin watching. The Mobile plan delivers a mobile centric experience will let you watch premium video and made-for-digital content directly on your smartphone. Lastly, the Preview plan will be free for anyone and will be ad-supported. It will let you watch a sample of the programming available on DIRECTV, as well as AT&T exclusive content.
AT&T and DIRECTV expect to launch this TV streaming service in the fourth quarter of 2016.
