Netgear is making waves this morning with a very exciting product announcement. Introducing Arlo, the first completely wireless HD home security camera. It is a WiFi smart home camera, that has no plugs and needs no wires. It is both indoor and outdoor ready, you can see clearly during the day and have night vision at night. And even better, it is full HD video and it is battery-powered for around 6 months. It is also very compact, as it is smaller than a bar of soap.
This unique design for a smart home camera, is not just with how compact it is. But it can be hung up outside, inside, or really anywhere and you can move it around. You get four magnetic dome mounts in the box and this means you can have up to four locations to put it, allowing you to move the location as you need to. The Arlo is connected via WiFi as well, meaning you can get real-time notifications. You can choose to get them via an application on your smartphone or have them emailed to you. As well as being able to view live stream on your mobile phone, tablet, or even on your computer. Via the application you can also see motion event recordings, customize activity alerts and arm/disarm motion-sensors.
Overall, I cannot wait to check out the Arlo. Netgear has really taken a unique stand on the idea of the WiFi smart home camera and by putting all of this technology inside of a compact easy to mount camera that is completely plug free and can last for 6 months on just two batteries, is a very unique stance. We do have to wait a little to get an Arlo though, as they will begin shipping in early 2015, most likely January, and for $349.99 you get the base station and two Arlo HD security cameras. You can get extra Arlo cameras for $169.99 as well. Keep in mind that Arlo camera’s can communicate with other smart devices, Netgear has partnered with LifX, a company that makes connected light bulbs and LED’s. I expect that Netgear will expand the smart home products that Arlo can play with as time goes along as well.
