Get ready to see your favorite method of mobile expression hit the big screen: Sony is planning on releasing an Emoji Movie on August 11, 2017!
Sony Pictures Animation president Kristine Belson revealed information about this movie earlier this week at Las Vegas’ Cinemacon. The project, which currently remains untitled, will take place inside of a smartphone. It will chronicle the adventures of the inhabitants of “Emoji Valley” as they travel to the home screen, or “the world of the wallpaper.” According to Belson, this film’s digital surroundings will be not unlike those of movies like Tron, “Inside your phone, there’s a secret world–and we enter through the text app where we discover Emoji Valley, where the industrious Emoji live and work.”
Other mobile apps will be appearing in this film as well. Spotify already confirmed that their music-streaming app will have a role, and Facebook’s appearance is still up for discussion. Although it is uncertain which other Apps will be featured, you can guarantee this movie will be chockfull of product placement.
It will be directed by Tony Leondis, who previously directed such films as Igor and Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch, and written by TV producer Eric Siegel.
This media phenomena is an unlikely candidate for a big-screen adventure. However, who’s to say that it won’t be a hit? Stay tuned for more information!
