Apple’s new campus or rather the second campus finally has a name and an opening month. Introducing Apple Park, not Apple Spaceship which I was suspecting to be–Either way the new campus will open in April. While the campus will open that month, it will take a period of six months for the 12,000 employees to move in. Plus, construction will continue into the summer as they finish building and plants several hundred more trees.
The ring-shaped main building comes in at 2.8-million square feet. The outside is layered in the world’s largest panels of curved glass. Apple Park was envisioned by Steve Jobs who would have turned 62 this Friday, February 24. To honor his memory, Apple is naming the Apple’s Park Theater the Steve Jobs Theater. It is a 1,000 seat theater that has a 20-foot-tall glass cylinder, 165 feet in diameter entrance with a carbon fiber roof. The Steve Jobs Theater is on top of a hill on the campus and is provides views of the main building.
Apple Park has a 100,000-square-foot fitness center for employees, a cafe that is open to the public, an Apple Store, and a visitors center. There is a pond, several meadows, and an orchard on the campus. In fact, the campus has over 9,000 trees and is powered by 100 percent renewable energy. Much of the power comes from 17 megawatts of rooftop solar, plus the building is self-ventilating.
