Sensors Alive, a new STEM toy from Thames & Kosmos, brings kids a creative and interactive look at physical science. Using a series of sensors that measure things like light, temperature, and sound that all synchronize with an interactive app, Sensors Alive brings physics to life. The sensor measurements for light, heat, and sound are all combined using a base station, which uploads the data to the app.
In the app, kids play in a fictional bioengineering lab, designing different digital animals to play with and feed based on their sensor measurements. These creatures are shaped specifically for their environments — for example, if the child takes sensor readings in a cold location, the creature may have long fur to keep warm. If the child lives in a noisy place, the creature may have smaller ears, and creatures from low light locations may have big eyes. As kids take sensor readings, they will learn more about the world around them, as well as principles of physics that define light, heat, and sound. Though it doesn’t emphasize it, the game also has an evolutionary aspect to it, with each creature being designed to be perfectly suited to its environment. With these features, it promises to be a highly interactive and exciting way for kids to learn about how science shapes the world around them.
Sensors Alive is set to drop in July of 2018 at a retail price of $149.99.
