Archer is back, the waiting has finally stopped, that is until next week for episode 2. Season 6 episode 1 of Archer has just premiered on FX, at the now regular time slot of Thursday’s at 10PM ET/PT. It bring’s that back to normal Archer, after season 5 was quite a departure from the normal. In Season 5 the gang lost their office, after some complications, and ended up be cocaine dealers. They went to Miami and moved into Cheryl’s family mansion in downtown Manhattan. And as created Adam Reed put it, they are resetting this season and going back to the classic espionage work, of course with many changes, like baby with Lana and Archer’s baby AJ. Let’s dive into our full review of The Holdout, season 6 episode 1 of Archer.
Season 6 episode 6 opens up with our main character, Archer and he is in the quite season. Presumably hung over and being rudely woken up by a phone ringing and just like that the new season is upon us. Archer evidently has been hiding out on a secluded island, as he needed a break or as Mallory put it “a self-pitying benders”. Archer as we now, was forced into becoming a parent at the end of last season. He has been gone for around six weeks and it seem the excitement of being a father has gone away. The opening sequence opens up with some phenomenal comical lines, that really put us right back into the Archer mind-set. We are then thrown into what might be the new setup, as the gang working with the CIA. Just like that Archer is thrown back into being a secret agent.
Archer it seems is having a good time or at least from our view, of adjusting to working for the CIA now. This episodes sequence, shows Archer meeting up with a Japanese Army Soldier who believes he is back in World War II, this turns into quite an exciting and moving sequence. Archer also shows off his secret agent skills, like fighting and using a weapon, in a different variant then last season as it is secret agent fighting skills. We also see what has been going on at the agency, all I’m going to say is that putting Pam and Cheryl in charge of redesigning the office, wasn’t the best idea. Although it does lead to a very interesting special room being discovered. Flash forward a few minutes after this, Archer ends up giving the Japanese soldier a history lesson, similar to the Six Million Dollar Man episode that had a similar story line. And of course it leads to Archer doing some racist actions and thinking certain ideas, but they end up working together, at least a little bit. It leads to injuries as well, mostly to Archer, some very painful but still comical injuries.
Discussions held between the soldier and Archer lead him to think about his new role as a parent, shows that he would have given anything to see his daughter grow up, this leads Archer to rethink his parenting systole and decides to go back and work hard. The soldier begins to learn more about the war as well, even the ending and then Archer apologizes on behalf of the country. In the end the episode closes off very nicely, with Archer finishing his first CIA job and doing something very nice for the soldier. It is show great to have Archer back and the first episode was phenomenal, it leaves us wanting more and more. The finale of the episode ends with Archer going back and reconnecting with Lana and Mallory. It sets the bars for Episode 2 very high, by the way it be airing Thursday, January 14th at 10PM. We would like to thank FX Networks for providing us with screens for Archer Season 6.
