Haier is showing off a new wine cellar that has solid-state cooling technology inside at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show. This is a new alternative cooling system that was developed by Haier and a company called Phononic; it uses a solid-state chip combined with H20/CO2 heat pipe technology. This new chip weighs about 25 times less and is around 100 times smaller than current cooling compressors being used today.
Wine requires precise storage conditions to preserve taste, this is where the need for wine cellars has come about and this is the first big innovation for quite some time in this category. Haier states that this new cellar will perfectly preserve wine thanks to this new solid-state cooling chip inside.
The Haier WS40GDA wine cellar puts a solid-state cooling chip and a thin-film temperature gap cooling components directly to a pipe heat exchange, therefore needing no motion of any parts. This helps to remove any vibrations or sudden movements that can disrupt the quality of what is being stored inside. Most refrigerators or wine cellars on the market today use a compressor which can cause some loud and strange noises, thanks to the use of this new cooling technology the wine cellar will not make any noise at all.
In terms of sustainability and environmentally friendliness, this cellar has a large reduction in energy consumption. In fact this wine cellar meets the California Energy Standard, which is a pretty tough one. Overall, it is not so much about this specific wine cellar from Haier, but from a larger lens, it shows the future of cooling being developed thanks to this new solid-state cooling technology.
