Last year, Samsung unleashed the Portable SSD T1, a small external drive that had a large amount of storage and was about the size of a credit card. It is time for the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show and Samsung has just unleashed the Portable SSD T3, the successor to the T1. It has some new design features and has a speed bump for data transfers.

The Portable SSD T3 has Samsung’s Vertical NAND and SSD TurboWrite technology inside. This ensures advanced and fast performance that will let the customers store and transfer large amounts of data from many different devices. These decisions on what to upgrade were based on the needs and feedback of Samsung’s customers.

No longer are you limited to just one terabyte of storage, the new Portable SSD T3 comes in 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, and a large 2TB model. Even with larger storage inside, the unit comes in at just 50 grams, this is under two ounces. SSD’s also have no moving parts, which makes them less prone to breaking then a traditional HDD. The Portable SSD T3 has a new shock resistant metal case, which will let the unit withstand up to 150G of force and drops up to two meters. It will also prevent over heating thanks to an integrated Thermal Guard, but if anything does happen it comes with a three-year limited warranty.

Samsung is going with USB 3.1 Type C on the T3, which makes it compatible with several USB support devices. This includes the MacBook from Apple, as well as Windows computers, Android devices, tablets, and smartphones. You will be able to send data onto and load data off of the T3 from almost any device, including computers or smartphones. The T3 will work with the new Samsung Portable SSD Android mobile application, which will allow you to easily move data on and off, check the amount of storage available, and make password changes. For the highest level of security, the Portable SSD T3 features AES 256-bit hardware encryption.

The Samsung Portable SSD T3 will be first launching in 2016 and is coming to the United States, along with China, Korea, and selected European countries. Soon after Samsung will subsequently make the drive available worldwide. Samsung has not yet announced pricing or an exact date of availability for the Portable SSD T3, but this should come in February.
