Snail Games is kicking off their 2015 Consumer Electronics Show by announcing their new line of gaming smartphones and a gaming console. They are a software publishing company in China and have become quite dominant in this market, but they are looking to broaden the scope of mobile gaming with their new line of products. The new smartphones are the W and W 3D, which are built on an Android based smartphone but, add joysticks and physical gaming buttons to the device. The OBox gaming console is running an Android OS and provides the end-user with a wide range of applications and games.
The W and W 3D smartphones are quite similar, except for one major difference between the two models. They both feature a 5.5-inch HD display, but on the W 3D model you get a glasses-free 3D experience. This is done through a new eye-tracking technology that incorporates real-time auto adjustment to create an immersive experience. Both the W and W 3D are running a custom version of Android. They will come pre-loaded with over 30 of Snail Game’s most popular titles. You will also be able to download applications and other games onto the devices. Snail Games says that both devices are “fully functional smartphones with competitive specs, complete with dual cameras, Android-based applications, and impressive battery life“, but have not confirmed exact specifications just yet. The W and W 3D will be available in North America as unlocked devices and should work on most United States carriers.
The OBox gaming console is running on a customized version of the Android operating system. It will provide 3D video output on 3D compatible TV’s and supports PC games as well. The ability to play PC games on the console will open up a lot of different titles at launch for this console. It uses both a joystick controller and a “air-mouse” controller that will utilize a motion-sensor.
Overall, Snail Games seem to be developing a unique line of products that is dedicated to gaming, and it will be interesting to learn more about them in the coming months. Once we have confirmed specifications and features on the new smartphones, we can begin to compare them to the current star performers on the market, like the Nexus 6 or the LG G3. The W and W 3D do seem to remind me of the Sony Xperia Play devices that didn’t do to well in the United States market, but this was a few years ago. Snail’s new gaming smartphones, the W and W 3D, integrate the layout of a traditional gamepad, with physical buttons and dual joysticks, into the phone’s design. Running an adapted Android OS, the phones also feature button recognition software, allowing users to play through their favorite mobile titles with the feel and control of a gaming device.
Beyond the impressive standard hardware, the W 3D also makes exclusive use of Snail’s latest advancement in eye-tracking and glasses-free 3D display technologies. According Snail Games USA Vice President Jim Tsai, the phones will come fully-loaded with more than 30 of Snail’s most popular games, free of charge. The W and W 3D will also support downloading from the large Android library of games, allowing users access to top mobile titles. The phones available in the North American market will arrive unlocked and compatible with most U.S. network providers. In addition to the specially designed layout, the devices are fully functional smartphones with competitive specs, complete with dual cameras, Android-based applications, and impressive battery life.
Built on the same principles as their gaming smartphones, Snail is also set to reveal its new gaming console, the OBox. Also Android-based, the OBox uses an adapted operating system that provides users with access to a wide range of games and applications. The game console enables 3D video output on 3D compatible TVs, and supports PC game porting to provide greater and higher quality choices in available games. The OBox uses a dual-joystick controller for the feel familiar to console gamers, while integrating a new “air-mouse” control system for motion-sensor pointing and controls.
