We’re at a point in technology where specifications and internal hardware pretty much doesn’t matter. Giving you the laundry list of specs is pointless to most consumers so I’m going to skip the spec part and get straight to the most important question:

Will I like it?

A lot of people don’t consider the industrial design of their phone and this was an important factor when it came to the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.

Now Samsung’s Flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S6 Edge is Samsung’s most eager attempt to make a dent in the Apple iPhone’s sales. I only say that because Samsung has spent a lot of money saying so. Rarely will you see advertisements for the regular S6 and it’s easy to guess why. One’s got an edge. The edge that Samsung believes will make a difference. Samsung was right about the edge making a difference but, in my opinion, it turned out to be the wrong difference.

Samsung really did their best with this model and it shows in the materials. Aluminum, not plastic. Glass, 2x. And a lot of other accents that came from their competitor. Now whether you like this or not, the iPhone has and continues to be made of fine materials and customers like that. So it turn, it would only be wise, and fair for Samsung to offer the same thing. The Samsung Galaxy S6 feels incredible in comparison to it’s predecessors. It’s engineering is on par with that of an iPhone. Industrial design and ergonomics are where the Galaxies slip and  unfortunately where you find the first fault. On the Galaxy 6 Edge in fact, that is where the phone falls short the furthest.

I’ll keep this part short and simple.

The Galaxy S6 Edge is flawed by it’s edge. The ‘edge’ is embedded in the experience of the phone and becomes forever and unavoidable feature. It’s like being unable to slow down a Ferrari. I know, speed is a significant selling point but let’s face it, you’re generally going to drive it around at normal speeds. The Galaxy S6 is that happy medium where the S6 Edge goes too far.

The screens on the S6 and S6 edge are incredible. I would say better than the iPhone 6 and 6+ but the technology only shines about half the time, particularly when you’re looking at something high resolution. The Galaxy S6 Edge’s edge unfortunately falls flat when it comes to usability. It bends everything on the sides… and unfortunately for looks only. Again, an unavoidable feature that is built into the phone. The regular S6 lets enjoy all of those vibrant pixels without the consistent additional thought of the S6 Edge’s edge.

The cameras are incredible on the S6 and S6 Edge. You almost can’t take a bad photo. The detail is rich and the function comes easily. Unlike other android phones, the camera feature is finally effortless and leaves you feeling like a pro.

The UI on the new Galaxies are much more refined than their predecessors and something that will finally set Samsung apart from their competitors.

So to be frank, if you are an Android user considering a new phone, the Galaxy S6 is your savior. It’s really quite good.

The Galaxy S6 Edge, at $100 more than the S6… is costly step in the wrong direction.

Score:

Samsung Galaxy S6 – 9

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge – 7
