AT&T is kicking off CTIA 2015 with a unique announcement, they have just unveiled the ZTE Mobley. This device is the carrier’s first WiFi hotspot designed for cars, more specifically a plug-in device for vehicles. This is different from the plug-in connected vehicle devices that will give you diagnostics about your car, this will provide a WiFi connection for several devices.
The ZTE Mobley is also traditionally priced, $0 with a two-year contract or for just $100 with no contract. On AT&T you can add the device to Mobile Share Value plan for an extra $10 a month. The Mobley can paired with a DataConnect plan for $20 for 1GB or $30 for 3GB.
Mobley will plug-in to your vehicles on-board diagnostics or OBD port. It should work with most vehicles that are from 1996 and newer. It will let you connect up to 5 devices to a WiFi network and it connects to AT&T’s 3G and 4G LTE networks. It will automatically turn on with the vehicle and will be powered by the vehicle. It is powered by a Qualcomm MDM9215 processor which will give you access to a faster band of 4G LTE, which should make a better experience than other in-car WiFi offerings.
Overall, the ZTE Mobley seems like quite an interesting device and should be filling a whole in the market. The ZTE Mobley will be exclusive to AT&T and will be landing this Friday, September 11th.
